I did a combo deer/bear hunting on Wednesday and finally connected on my first bear ever. The morning started off really slow with no signs of deer at all. I did see a lot of older bear droppings which kept my hopes up for a bear. To make this morning hunt short, I didn't see a sign of life in the area so I packed up and headed up to higher country. So I drove from 6000 feet up to 7500 feet. Got up the my second spot and it was still only 12 noon. So I had lunch and took a nap. Woke up at 4 and got ready to head out on foot. From where I parked, I hiked up about 200 yards and quickly spotted a movement out of the corner of my right eye. I looked again and sure enough it was a bear. He saw me too and started running. Out of the blues, I made a deer grunt (don't ask me why) and to my surprise, she stopped to give me a broadside shot. So I aimed and pulled the trigger and she dropped right away.
I savor the excitement and kill for a few mins before calling my younger brother and making my way to the bear. When my brother finally found me, we made our way to the bear and pose for a few pictures before skinning, gutting, and quartering it so we can pack it back to the car. Gutting the bear, I can see that I hit her in the lungs and the heart. The heart completely exploded and it was actually scary to look at. With the two of us working on the bear, we were done in 2 hours and headed back to the car.
So after an awful morning of a combo hunt, I was persistent and it finally paid off in the evening. It's my first bear and it's not a big bear or a small bear but one thing is for sure....it'll be good eating. That's one less bear for all the bear hunters to worry about in D7. Enjoy the pics guys.

what caliber? My cousin shot a bear last weekend also...my first time having bear jerky. I tried giving some bear jerky to my sister's dog, it sniffed it and turned away. Usually it'll eat any food I give it. Must of been the smell. My mom was saying the dog doesn't want to eat it's distant relative. LOL.

It's an older model 30.06 semi auto. Too bad they don't make this model anymore because there is very little recoil on it. That's the only rifle I use for big games. Bear jerky was awesome and my kids loved it. I did managed to bbq a few steaks but they were hard and very chewy which I ended up giving it to my boxer and he didn't mind it at all. He ate all the steaks and was begging for more. LOL

Bear steaks will be tough and chewy. It's like eating an old bull. My best solution with tenderizing bear steaks, is to give it a good rub of baking soda and leave it over night(don't salt it - this will absorb moisture and makes it tough). Anyways, out of all that and no laab? LOL.

LOL Laab is always on the menu for all my big game kills.

Did you use the skin? Probably one of the best part for Laab. LOL.

Believe it or not, I've never tried deer or bear skin. Heard different opinions about it and haven't been brave enough to try it yet. LOL I have 3 more weeks to try to get my buck, so if I do...maybe I'll be brave enough to give it a shot.

They still make that model.....it was a 742 sportsman then it was the 7400 and then 750...I think? But yes its Remington's main semi auto. I have a 25 yr old 30-06 model 742 also and it is a sweet shooting gun!!
