View Full Version : Lawson's Landing

Hello folks. I'm planning a 4 day camping trip in September. I would like to try fishing for salmon or rockfish or Halibut outside of the Bay. I have never done this before and frankly am a bit scared to take my boat out there. I used to surf a lot and do know how to read sets and am familiar with tides and swells. I spoke with a couple of guys last time I went there and they told me that my boat should be fine in fair weather, if I was careful. I have a 16 foot crestliner *with a 50 horse main and a 15 horse kicker. I have downriggers. *I have all safety gear and a radio.

My plan was to hire a guide to take me out and show me the ropes. Then I would strap on a pair and venture out myself later. The problem I have is that I just got off the phone with Lawson's and they told me there are no local guides that launch from the Boathouse there.

Does anybody know of any locals down there that may be interested in making some dough to get the Green off of me? Or is anyone interested in meeting down there? We can use my boat or yours. I'll be there from Sep 15th through Sep 18.

I'm heading down there today... my cousin manages their cattle, so I'll try to remember to ask him if he knows anyone. If I get some good info, I'll post it next week.

I hope you have a great time Mike. I made a commitment never to go out on a major holiday again. I'm working every Memorial day and Labor day for the rest of my life! It just seems like someone keeps all the major knucklheads in a cage untile those two holidays, then the let 'em loose to screw up everyones lives. I went to Lawson's 2 memorial days ago. Someone parked about 25 yards from me, with one of those $10,000 car stereos, decided that everyone within a 5 mile radius obviously wanted to hear their music on 10 up until about 4 a.m. Drove me up the friggin' wall!!!

LMAO!!! Man that sucks. My family has been going every laborday to dillon for about 10 years now.It can get crazy on those big weekends though :D

Hey Vito I live in Sebastopol (20 mins from bodega) and if Im free Ill take you out and show you the places I know and share with ya anything I can. If you dont get anything set up with someone else give me a call 707 823-5911. I think your crestliner would be fine for the outerbay and down to 10 mile or north a ways, conditions permitting. Ive had my 18' out to cordell several times. I got a 27 now im still trying to get used to. Hopefully the salmon will return before you get here. *Rick

There have been some really nice days this last couple of months, this is my second year out there, I love it, just have to give mother nature respect. You will feel a little spooky the first few times, but once you learn what your boat can handle and what you can handle and how to read the weather, swells, windwaves you will have a blast. You don't need a guide if you don't want, just start picking everyones brains, load up with info, find out where the fleet is at, fish where they are, after a few times you will just go where ever you want. like I said you will love it out there.

* * I just got back from the most fun vacation I have ever had! It was even more fun than the East Cape last year!

* * I started out wanting to pay someone to take me out of the bay and show me the basics of fishing the general area - but what I got was worth more than money and an experience that will last a lifetime.

* * Not only did Rick not accept money for the trip, he picked me up at the dock, took me on the grand tour of the area, and introduced me to some of the best fishing I have ever seen. He and his mates - Gary and Dan - were top notch fisherman and took excellent care of me. They showed me: Estero, Bird rock, Elephant rock, 10 mile beach and Point reyes. His boat is really nice and really fast. It is 27 feet and has two 200 horse motors pushing it along. I will testify that we caught air a couple times!

* * We got to the fishing grounds early and were catching fish non-stop for hours. The fleet ended up coming and fishing where we were. After the boxes were filled we got into some salmon. I got the lesson on lures, stacking, speed, depth and location. It was amazing to get into something that actually pops your downrigger clip!

* * They Dropped me off at the dock and off I went. I made it back to camp, cooled down with a cold one and got the knife out. I marinated the filets in Toyamansi (the best marinade in the world) and we feasted on Rock fish and chops.

* * The next morning we were off to go crabbing. This was my turn to be the guide. I took two of my wife's friends inside the bay and we caught crabs until the live well was full. That night we had crab and chicken for dinner.

* * The next morning we slept in and ate a huge breakfast. Then we went to the beach and I caught and released about 20 surfpurch. What a blast.

Rick, Gary and Dan. I had a really good time. I can't thank you enough for showing me the ropes. I feel confident now that I can fish the outer bay in safety. I probably won't venture out into the open ocean in my boat, unless it is dead calm. We saw a 19 foot aluminum getting pushed around pretty good. I can't wait to explore Ostero and catch my first limit of rockies from my own boat.

* * I owe you all a fishing trip or two. Next time you are in the area and want to get into some salmon or trout, Please do give me the honor of returning your favor.

* * Pics to come.

Here are Dan, Rick and Gary. Dan is looking down at one of two full fishboxes.

Here are Dan and Gary holding up their biggest rockfish for the day.

Here is Dan fighting his 2nd salmon, Gary waiting with the net, and Rick waiting for the photo op.

Duke, that's kind of what I thought. I saw a 26 Striper tractor launch there once, but the way I fish (till the last minute) I'm afraid I'd be forced into a self-extraction.

Great story, great fishing, great pics.. couldn't ask for more! (More salmon maybe, but we'll let that go for now..)

I'm thinking a saltwater Sniffer Fest is due, maybe even overdue.. course maybe a better time would be next year.. pick a weekend and make reservations. Fill Westside with Sniffers.. might be the biggest bash the rangers have ever seen there. Any other thoughts?
