Has anyone been up there lately? Wondering what the lake conditions are with snow levels. Snow expected in the sierras 7000 to 8000 feet elevations Thursday and dropping to 6000 thursday night. I have Friday off now and was thinking of heading up there depending on the amount of existing snow.

My brother-in-law said that Red Lake on this side was a popscicle still (lower elevation east side Sierra's) so I would imagine that Bear is not much better........Jetspray

I was at Bear on Monday. The gate is closed so you'll have to walk in. There were patches of snow starting just below 6000' and patches around the lake. Water level is low.

Yeah, but...

did you fish?

The lake is fish able! I went a few weeks back and talked to some guys that dragged an alum boat to the water and saw they caught some HUGE lake trout trolling. The gate was closed and we walked down to the water. It is definitely shore fish able. Boat fishing will take some serious work!

Do you think the lake is accessible from the gate via UTV? I know there are a few trails that run down to the lake...might be able to tow a small aluminium boat in?

I'm not sure how they will react to an UTV. I do know they get really stinky if you 4X around the gate to the tune of, I've heard a $500.00 fine. There was a clear way around the gate on the right side (last Monday) and you should be able to tow your boat down to the dirt launch. Please refer to the first sentence. To answer Treebeard's question, no I didn't. All I did was take a look at the lake which is easy since I only live about 20 miles from there. I was more interested in scoping out a few places for opening day the end of the month.
