Thought this was cool when I ran into it earlier.

Yes the title says April an should have said August.

And I know I meant to put it on the campfire board. maybe had one too many last night.

515-Pound Halibut Caught By Marco Leibenow Near Norway May Be World Record
Aug 17, 2013
One German fisherman may have just reeled in a world record.

According to fishing tour company Angelreisen Hamburg, Marco Liebenow was fishing off the coast of Norway when he managed to catch a 515-pound halibut in July.

Speaking on behalf of Liebenow, Angelreisen Hamburg's David Bottcher said that reeling in the fish felt like pulling in a submarine because of its size, The Daily Mail reports. After 90 minutes, Liebenow and three other men managed to haul in the massive catch, but couldn't fit the 8.6-foot fish on their boat. Instead, they had to drag it back to harbor alongside the schooner.

The 515-pound halibut may be the largest caught yet. The current record stands at 459 pounds for Pacific halibut (Alaska, 1996) and 418 pounds for Atlantic halibut (Norway, 2004), according to the International Game Fishing Association. Liebenow has reportedly contacted the IGFA, but is still waiting on the association's approval.

Liebenow is not the first to catch a huge halibut near Norway. In March, another German fisherman spent four hours reeling in a 427-pound fish.

I saw this awhile back as well and thought it was pretty cool. I have hooked and landed halibut over 100lbs in Alaska and that was a hard as heck. I can't imagine how that big guy must have fought!

Man that thing is HUGE! It's so big that it almost looks photoshopped!

That thing looks like it could eat a small child with ease.

Weird. This story seems to repeat almost every year or so in the same way. German fisherman heads up to the Norwegian Arctic Resorts/Fish Preserves and gets into a near, or often record braking fish. Same thing happened with a cod earlier this or last year, then a halibut last year I'm pretty sure.

Definitely makes me want to have the west coast of Norway on my fishing bucket list alongside Montauk, the Kenai and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota.
