View Full Version : Fort Bragg 8/19-20

Holly and I went to Fort Bragg for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary.

Friday, we fished aboard the SeaHawk with Captain Tim. We had plenty of room on the boat as there was only 4 other fishers, plus Chris the deckhand and his dalmation Mike. Between the 2 of us we caught well over 40 rockfish and I managed 1 ling. The size of the fish was on the smaller side, but it was a great day fishing none the less.

Here is my ling from Friday

We had bounced around the idea of going on a salmon trip Sat. morning, but as the sun came up we were still in bed. We had breakfast and left for Pt. Arena to fish from the pier. There wasn't much action there, although one guy did bring up a nice cabezon. We decided to hot foot it back to Ft. Bragg and got abord the Rumblefish for another afternoon of rock fishing. We didn't catch nearly as many fish that afternoon but the grade was much *better. I limited on lings while Holly got a ling plus a nice variety in her limit of rockfish.

Capt. Kurt and the Rumblefish did an excellent job, it was a very enjoyable afternoon.

When we came in Friday there was a commercial fisherman talking about his load. He had this fish. I'm not sure of the name, but I believe he called it an Opah. Very nice looking fish.

Glad to see you got out there ;D ;D ;)

It was a great weekend, paying for it a little this morning though! Trying to plot my next escape ;D

there are 2 kinds of fish in the ocean that look
like this one....

the opah.....
the meat on this fish is mmmmmmm awsome..... :)

and the mola mola or sun fish..

this sun fish has no great meat on it, very boney
and brings
bad luck to one who catch's it and keeps it....

Allfish & Holly,

Yup, that was a fun day! I was up front on the Rumblefish with y'all that day. (I was with that 9 year old redhead that out fished me and his Dad lol). Allfish, that photo of that ling just does not do it justice. That was one nice ling. I'll bet nobody on the boat even challenged it for the pot ;D

Holly, here is that belated applause I owe you... GOOD JOB! YOU DID IT! YAAAY!! ::)

We had a feast of abalone and fish taco's last night. You know you are cookin' up some grub when after the party, you look in the fridge and all of the food is gone, but most of the beer is still there 8)

Tight lines,

Lingslayer, the red headed boy was on fire! That was a shame about his ling :-X

I was gonna buy everybody a beer, but no one waited around 'till my payout;) ;D I did tip the crew nicely tho.

I was a bit disappointed in the pictures, but I know the size of it and that is what matters.

Well be there again when they start the rockfish/crab combo trips, maybe we'll see ya.

A couple more pics

Hehehe... Yup that was too funny about that ling. It's OK though, Kaya (the lil' boy) and I have endless ammo on him now. I think Kaya is having more fun telling the story about "the one that got away" than he would have if he would have kept the fish.

I still cannot believe that first cast of his.... 3 fish on 2 hooks! One big vermillion on the shrimp fly, one small rockie on the diamond jig, and one big ol' ling hitchhiking on the rockie. That was cool 8)

I hope to see you both again soon.

Nice pictures. I hear those China rockfish are one of the best tasting fish. I tried one, but don't eat enough rockfish to notice.

A few years ago, I was fishing in about 25 feet of water and this HUUUGE Sunfish/Opah swam right under my boat... we all moved to one side to check it out. It didn't care that we were there... just took it's time slowly cruising by. It had to be over 100 lbs. HUGE! Must have been a sunfish because it was grey with no patterns.

Ling, that is too funny! Wish I would have known you were a sniffer :), I might not have had a puttin on the pants discussion with you! We had a blast and really enjoyed the Rumblefish, can't wait to go back. It was nice hooking up with you!

what are all those little fish doing dead??? one decent fish in the lot!!!!!

Geez scott, welcome I guess. THOSE little fish are rockfish, and really in 120 depth or less they don't get a WHOLE lot bigger. They were the biggest I've seen in 6 weeks, and that lingcod? 19.5 isn't any little wimpy fish...thanks for you post however. I'm going to check out your posts and check out the pics of your bigguns..by the way, those little dead fish were yummy.

well Scott, let me see if I can explain this so even you can understand...

I go fishing
I catch fish
I kill fish
I eat fish

I'm headed for the Bay Area today to fish out the gate tomorrow, hope to limit on those Rockys and maybe a "Butt" too, a Salmon would be nice too but my freezer is just about full ;)
