View Full Version : Bass Fishin 4 Trout....McClure 12-26-13

Jeff called me about a month ago & asked where we were fishing on the day after Xmas.....well up until that phone call I didn't know we were fishing. I was open to anything so he suggested we hit McClure for some spotted bass. Sounded good to me & thought we could get a little trout fishing in too. My parents were up from SOCAL so I was fortunate enough to have my dad join us for the day as well.

We all agreed on a later than normal start so we could ample rest from Xmas day. We met up in Waterford around 0745 & made our way up SR-132. Rolled into McClure right around 0830 to be greeted by a severely depleted water supply. The lake was so low it looked to be half its normal size.

Clear skies, birght sunshine & no wind.....temps in the 50s @ 0900......about as perfect of a day I could have asked for. We shot out of Barret Cove & went in search of major points or structure. Neither were too hard to find....the bass on the other hand were. We bounce around quite a bit in search of the bass. I was even marking anything. We made our way up into the narrows were we found a little feeder spring.....just enough water trickling into the lake to draw some fish. The little cove marked a lot of fish but no takers on the drop shots. I decided to experiment & tossed a chrome Kastmaster & was immediately rewarded with a fresh colorful rainbow trout http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k500/Schatgun/IMG951150_zpsdcae2b06.jpg (http://s1112.photobucket.com/user/Schatgun/media/IMG951150_zpsdcae2b06.jpg.html)
Fired off a few more casts & continued to hook up with some trout.....the fish were bright, healthy & feisty....

Didn't take long before Jeff & my dad abandoned thier drop shot rigs.....Jeff tied on a LC SP60 while my dad joined in on the Kastmaster action.
We didn't have much difficulty hooking up on trout......they were everywhere....& if you weren't hooking up you'd see them chase the lure right up to the boat before spooking.....the water was clear to about 8' with a temp of 55 degrees.

There was no shortage of trout action regardless of where we fished. We probably each double limited by lunch time. I stop counting after getting my 1st limit. I don't see the point in it....We had a good time & caught lots of fish....
Noon had come upon us & with all the fun & action we had worked up quite the appetite. I busted out the Boat-B-Q & fired it up while Jeff & my pops continued to put a smack down on the trout.

While I was cooking I tossed out a deep diving Rapala & dragged it about 60' back as I tended to the table fare.....sure as **** I got 2 fish this way....

Ok....grub is ready....put the Terrova on spot lock & we sat down & grubbed on grilled Firecracker Braats & sweet peppers. We had some Downtown Brown, Longboard & Lil' Sumphin to wash them down.

During lunch we decided after getting more than our fill on some fantastic trout action that we'd focus on the bass again. We made our way back towards the damn to give that area of the lake a chance. Again the bass remained elusive but we picked up a few more trout here & there.
The water is so low the original dam is exposed along with all the old railroad bridges .....pretty cool to see.
We also had a few jackasses that were eyeballing us as we fished....

The day was winding down & we were running out of daylight so we called it quits....

We were in the far southeast corner of the lake when we called it quits. As we came screaming out of the creek arm we noticed a boat w/ 2 fellas & a little boy rowing with diminishing light, temps, no cell service & a long ways to go to the ramp.....NO GOOD. So we rolled up alongside, tossed them a rope & pulled them in....Our good deed for the day.

On the road by 4......what a great all around day....didn't find the bass but we definitely got our feel for fish pulling on our lines.....Had a great time with my dad & Jeff, enjoyed some good food & brews, some fine cigars and a little Hirsch Bourbon to round things off.....Thanx for reading

GREAT REPORT... I have to get back to that lake, its my go to. Big karma points for the tow job. That lake is the only place i have had to be towed in, from Bagby to Horseshoe by a guy in a 12 ft alum and a 10 horse, must of took a hour. So i def. know how greatfull that guy you towed felt. Loved all the pics. of all the trout and the grub. clb
