I was just wondering if any of you have jigged Folsom lake for deep water trout? My brother-in-law really wants to target trout, I dont have any down riggers, so was wondering if its even worth a shot? Iv only fished Folsom for bass, would the trout be more near the damn at this time of year? Thanks for any help everyone and tight lines this weekend!

If you're out early enough, you may get lucky by the dam closer to the surface than you'd think.

Hi Texwalker, the lake is 5min away, how close to the surface are we talking? Thanks!

Oh, crap. I can't give you an exact depth but I do know that they come up towards the surface to feed at night. If I had to come up with a number, I would say 20-30'. But that is early in the morning. As the day progresses and the surface warms, they drop back down. Trout don't like water over 70 so once they have eaten they are going to drop down to the 60 temp zones

I've caught Kings in 30-35 feet of water up by the dam drop shotting a plastic worm but it wasn't in the summer.

Thanks guys! Ill just start around 30ft and work our way down see if we get any bites and stay there, if fishing doesnt work out we will just go wakeboarding! Thanks again!

I would not try jigging. Trout are usually moving around in open water, so it would be a real crap shoot. I have caught kings jigging on rock piles in 50-70 feet of water, but that is another topic...

I would try trolling a nightcrawler behind a dodger. You can troll 1.3 to 1.6 mph. Add an 18 inch leader in front of your dodger, and run a 1 to 1.5 ounce keel sinker in front of your setup. Let out between 60 and 100 feet of line. This should put you in 25 to 40 feet of water, which is where some trout should be hanging out.
