View Full Version : Camanche 2/19/2017 Brown Trout!

Fished Camanche on Sunday with Koke Machine83 in my boat. The trip was highlighted by strong winds, pouring rain, and a surprise species - a brown trout. When we first saw the color we thought it was a Sacramento Pikeminnow. Our guess is that it spilled over from Pardee or perhaps browns were planted at Camanche at one time. It hit a copper/fluorescent red Speedy Shiner in open water just west of Big Hat Island at 6 feet on the downrigger. It lost scales when it wrapped in the line, and was deep hooked so we kept it. Otherwise we would have released it. I've caught other random browns like this at Oroville over open water which I've always released.

Water Temperature: 52 degrees
Weather: Strong South winds, rain at times, white caps
Speed: 2.3 to 2.8 mph
Depths: Topline with 1/4 ounce sinkers on the side planers, 3 to 6 feet on the downriggers. Best depth was 3 feet on the downrigger
Area: West end of lake by dam
Lures: Best was orange Arctic Fox trolling fly tipped with a small red worm behind a small wiggle disc. Also fish on copper/fluorescent red and gold Speedy Shiners.

Here is the brown trout - it was our first fish of the day

Here is a nice Lassen Rainbow

A bonus third species - a 13 inch black crappie for a 'slab stack' fish sandwich

More pics of the brown...

That looks more like a rainbow in steelhead coloration to me. But whaddo I know?

Never thought of fishing comanche for trout, I wonder how it compares to new melones for that species?

Super nice fish!

With that big mouth it looks more like a LCT. But they do have fish that look similar to your fish in Beardsley. They call em lake browns but I think they are some kind of naturally occurring hybrids. Half bow /half brown.

Half bow /half brown.

Pretty sure that's impossible although I'm not a fish biologist.
