Shimano Cardiff 300a is pretty bullet proof and a universal reel IMO.

Pflueger President 6925x

Like Pflueger President 6925 or 6935 as suggested by Plug-n-Jug. However, fitted my SST Kokanee with Okuma Trio High-Speed spinning reel and love it.

for a more economical reel I like the Shimano Sedona 1000

I prefer the Daiwa Aird 1000. Have several of them.

Compare it to the Pflueger President 6925. Either the Shimano or Pflueger would be a great choice but if you compare it the Pflueger has a faster ratio, more bearings, lighter weight. Geez, do I sound like a Pflueger salesman or what!

so thinking about the shimano sahara 1000 any thoughts The Shimano has a little more drag but weighs a little more , The Pflueger is a little lighter with a little less drag . But its a trout rod/reel so how much drag do you really need ... I have all Shimano Stradics for Salmon and Steelies but I use and love how smooth the Pflueger is and how it feels with trout . My personal thoughts .

I own both the Pflueger president series reels as well as a few Shimano reels (6-8 of each). Most of mine are 2500 Shimano or 6730 or 6930 Presidents. My opinion is for the money the President series is very smooth. I do however feel that the Sahara is tougher and will last longer. Will you wear a President out? Probably not and for an ultra light trout set up I would probably go with the Pflueger. I went with Pfluegers for my lightest bass rods but Shimanos for my other bass rods. For trout Pflueger.

I have fished many of the reels mentioned by our forum contributors and currently use a Pfleuger President reel on one of my trout rods. I have one more reel to commend for your consideration: the Okuma Stratus V. Now don't bother trying to find it on the Okuma site- their president, Doug Lasko told me in an email that the Stratus series reels are made by Okuma exclusively for Dick's Sporting goods. I bought one for my son's birthday last fall and was so impressed with it that I went back and bought two more - the S-25 for trout and an S-55 for one of my striper poles. They feature an 8+1 bearing system and are built "Okuma tough" ( I am still fishing with a 13 year old Okuma Avenger on one of my striper poles and it shows no sign of slowing down.) The prices on this series of reels make make them an incredible value (and no, I do not have any financial interest in either Dick's or Okuma - I am just a fishing nut that is impressed with some newly acquired toys.)

Cant go wrong with any mid priced one. I have used a Pfleuger President for the past 5 years and it is still doing well.

If it's for trolling... I got the okuma low profile cold water line counters. Awesome reel so far. :) good price too!

Okuma has always been good for me too.
