squawfish is a great bait for about any fish out there. cut it into little chunks and cast it out there. cool bait. fish next to trees in the water and low moving water. :)

Live they can only be used in the delta / sac river region where caught. Dead, they can be used anywhere bait is permitted.

I have always used canned yellow corn to catch squawfish it seems to work great plus you can always catch carp or suckers which also make good bait, you may even catch a catfish once in a while. Fish slow moving water and pools.

Squawfish will eat almost anything. Live crickets work great for catching them from 6" and up. I've even caught 4" ones on a #14 gold hook with no bait at all. I just jigged it under the boat when I kept my boat in the river. Also, flyfishing for squaws can be productive, but that's a different board...... [smiley=naughty.gif]

cheese, cheese, cheese, nothing can top over squaws with cheese, its almost a guaranteed every hit will be a squaw, if its not a squaw, its a cat ;)

any ordinary cheese works, besides string cheese and sandwich cheese ;D just get those cheese come in rectangle packet and cut it into squares and just hook it up and cast you go, yellow or white, they both works the same ;)

My dad always gets squawfish with salmon roe. I was not sure how that would work with salmon season closed.

Cheesefish, oh i mean squawfish love Velveeta or Kraft singles or anything soft like that. Roe and bits of sardines work alright too. If u plan to use them for bait make sure they are alive and swimming. Any size works, but as you know the saying goes.. Big Bait = Big Fish.
