View Full Version : E Fk Carson

It was so nice up here in the heart of the Sierra I decided to bail out of work for the afternoon and go fishing.
A quick look at the USGS site said flows on the East Carson were in the low 200s and the NWS said temps in Markleeville were in the low 40s. So I knew the river would be neither an ice rink nor a raging torrent. I parked at Hangman's bridge, and it took me 37 minutes to stomp downstream to the gauging station hole.
It was perfect:

I tied on a silver and black spoon with a single barbless hook and had a 20"+ fish on for about 30 seconds before it jumped and spit the hook. Even though it was a let down to not land the fish, I was still pretty stoked to at least get one on. I then headed back up stream to the hole just below the confluence with Markleeville creek. The spoon didn't scare anything up, so I switched to a rainbow PM, using needle nose pliers to pinch down the barbs. That did the trick. This 16"-18" bow smacked the lure on the first cast:

It fought hard, and after the quick pic, it bolted back down to the depths of the hole. Now is a good time to hit this river, 'cause when the snow starts melting, it will be blown out for a couple of months.

Nice. Good point on not waiting for snow melt. By the opener it will be high.

Thanks for sharing.
