View Full Version : Rain

Any possibility that this recent rain might stir up some catfish? Any suggestions?

12-20-2005, 05:19 PM
Nightcrawlers under a bobber at the mouth of feeder creeks.
I'm going to try that as well as some anchovy at Del Valle tomorrow. ;) ;D
(Contrary to popular belief cats will bite year round)

12-20-2005, 07:23 PM
that is true, i catch em in the winter time all day with livers or sardines.

Where would be a good place in the Sac area?

12-25-2005, 12:28 AM
I tend to stick to the lakes during the winter and can produce nice fish all year round. I stay away from the rivers due to the increased flows, unless I am going for sturgies which I usually fish for once the rain starts. Good luck

Hey wolf74 you asked for a good sport in the sac area. Well just up from verona is a great place. Some big ones came out of there. ;D

Yolo bypass or Sutter bypass anywhere you can fish the flood water. Fish worms, mice, rodents of any kind. these are the first things the catfish go for when these fields flood.

12-27-2005, 03:31 PM
I like Miner slough but they are only pan size there, up to 3 lbs. They bite year round though. JIM D.

12-27-2005, 08:22 PM
Hey there, Jim D........long time no see, where you been hiding? :)

12-27-2005, 08:44 PM
How do you fish mice/rodents? Do I take my mouse trap catchins for bait? go to the pet store and get feeder mice? I drove over the sutter bypass today and it looks good, yolo is blowing as well.

12-28-2005, 12:45 AM
... mice, rodents of any kind. these are the first things the catfish go for when these fields flood.

How do you hook a rodent? I don't think I can push myself to put a hook in a live rodent :P

M.R., I lost my bag awhile back and have not been doing much fishing. Had to get everything back on track. I will be fishing again soon, weather permiting. As far as mice for bait, I have never used them but have seen them taken off the water by big fish. I fish will hit dead mice you can get frozen feeder mice at pet stores. JIM D.

i've used a dead bird one time work real good! i think catfish will hit anything including a bare hook as long as its got some sent on it! they are not picky!

Hey Adrian,
Last year at this time, I fished the flooded parking lot at Knights Landing. I just set my chair up on the entrance to the lot, tossed out a crawler and nailed one after another. Some decent sized fish cruz through there.

12-28-2005, 06:06 PM
Out of a parking lot? You serious? Where do they come from?

12-28-2005, 06:43 PM
The Sac. is loaded with big cats. When it floods they go with the water where ever it goes. Its like HomeTown Buffet for them. The first few days are the best.

12-29-2005, 06:50 AM
hey plug and jug, your right about the parking lot at nights landing, ive caught lots of fish there when the parking lot is under water, which it is now. theyve got the gate closed but it is full. and also if you know where pump 108 is on the river just up the road, that is where you will knock them dead. water is at the top of the gauge now i checked it out yesterday, looks like good fishen to me.

12-29-2005, 07:01 AM
The parking lot rocks when it first floods. The worms come up through the cracks in the asphalt and the cats chow down. The best thing is that THERE ARE NO SNAGS ON ASPHALT! ;D

12-29-2005, 12:31 PM
Ok, its worth a try. How do I get there?

12-29-2005, 01:04 PM
Take I-5 north,go past the airport and over the Sac river. Just befor you get to Woodland land, turn right(north) on county road 102. It's about 7 miles till you get Knights Landing. Stay on the main road thru town(its not very big). You want to turn left on 4th st. There's a store on the corner named after me...Plug-n-Jug. ;D If you cross the Sac river again youve gone to far. After your on 4th, you'll cross a slew...Dunnigan, I think. The entrance to the parking lot is just past the slew on your left. Let me Know when you might go. I'll try and join you.

Water is approx. 6 feet from the back door of sting rays this morning, couple of guys were fishing the boat ramp parking lot last night.

12-30-2005, 08:49 AM
The sloughs or cannels, whatever they are around knight's landing are great for cats also. I used to catch 4 to 14 lb. cats in them. I have caught as many as 5- 5lb cats in one night. JIM D.

12-30-2005, 11:21 AM
Not sure if I can make it this weekend. My son and I have been wanting to break out the dirtbikes and go throw some mud. The decision is up to him. He's 10 and dying to roost dad with mud. If I do go fishing it will be sunday morning.
Good luck if you go. Have a safe and happy new year.

12-30-2005, 08:45 PM
Yea I think I might go next week. I think I'll be too hung over Sunday.

12-31-2005, 08:22 AM
hey m r. lets take the boat out to folsom when the rain stops, well fish some feeder creeks, for some big cats.. let me know. and also try pump 108 up at the landing, looks like a winner there also...

01-17-2006, 03:39 PM
Is it still flooded out there? Still fishable?

01-17-2006, 07:47 PM
how bigga cats do you wanna go after? I have some summer spots where I've caught some 25+ pound cats thats not too far from you I have a few spots actually but those are all mostly just good in the summer. As for this time of year I know a spot where you can catch cats all night long that are about a pound= 10-12''. I mean all night long! You could catch a hundred in a night if you wanted. Most of them are right about at a pound in this particular spot I've never caught any much bigger. I'm sure there out there but I dunno how to catch em.

PM me if you want the location and I'll send it over.

Is pump 108 open for access anymore?? I remember driving by a few years ago and a pheasant club had it all locked up. If I'm thinking correctly that's the first pumphouse on the river you hit if you drive that road from plug n jug. I used to fish there all the time. Caught lm bass, crappie, carp, catfish, stripers, sm bass, and lots of different sunfish there.
