Me and MB went to Berryessa yesterday. We started fishing in Cappel Cove at 1:15pm with a slow start. We were jigging in the trees with minnows and no luck. So we found a shoreline and and started fishing. I instantly caught 2 average sized bluegill. Then MB caught a small bass. We decided to leave the shoreline and find another tree to tie off too. We found a good tree in the shade and it was 25 feet deep too! We casted out our catfish poles and then started jigging with our other poles. As we were jigging MB's catfish pole go crazy! He sets the hook and the fight is on. This thing fought for like 7-8 minutes. He just wouldnt stop!! Once it go near the boat it started swimming down 25 feet, but MB finally tired it and i was able to net it. It was a nice catfish!!! We decided to keep it. After that we didnt no luck so we left and found another shoreline. The bass were jumping crazy! They were hitting minnows on the surface of the water. It was wierd because all of the sudden about ten bass would start jumbing in a big circle. So we fished there and i managed a baby bass. Then it started getting dark so we headed near the parking lot and found a tree to tie off too and dropped the crappie light. When we looked down it was only 4 feet deep!!! But we decided to stay there. We casted our catfish poles out with dead minnows on and we jigged live minnows with our other poles. The light was gathering tons of big minnows! And we looked down to the bottom and we see 3 salmon at about 24 inches looking at our minnows!! They kept on circling them but not hitting, then they disappeared. Alright this is when the crazy thing happened. This is no exaggeration and what I'm about to tell is 100% true. It was 9:30 and me and MB were looking in the water from our boat and we see the biggest shadow in the water! I grab the flash light and point at it. Its the biggest catfish we have ever seen!! THIS THING LOOKED TO BE AS BIG AS OUR INFLATABLE BOAT!!. IT HAD TO BE AT LEAST 25 POUNDS!! It circled our boat for a second and then swam off into the dark water never to be seen again. Just before we seen that catfish MB's catfish pole went off and he set the hook and his line snapped. Then we decided to leave, we turned off the crappie light and started reeling in our catfish poles leaving our jigging poles in the water still. As we were reeling in the catfish poles, MB's jigging pole got a hit and he set the hook. It was a nice 11-12 inch bass. As soon as we turned off the crappie light that sucker hit. Is it because the bass are afraid of the light? Well, it was a good trip and a couple amazing things happened. It was definetly one of the most funnest Berryessa trips. We left at 11:00pm and got stuck on traffic on the bay bridge, we didnt get home till 1:00am. MB will post pics tonight.

Did you get a picture of the catfish that was 25+lbs? that would scare the h*ll out of me!

No, we were just sitting in the boat stunned and silent just staring at it. We only seen it for about 12 seconds anyways.

Hey Panfish and MB, whats up with the dates on your pictures? It says Jan. 2002. Are these pictures that old? ???

NO they are from this weekend. Haven't set the date on this camera lately. I only use it on the boat because I wouldn't be too sad if I dropped it. :-/ will have to check it before our next trip. That would be a good catch for Jan though.

Right on guys. Congratulations! Had a similar experience with a monster cat at the delta. I had been throwing crawdad shells into the water right off the bank all night and heard something splashing around down there in the dark. Grabbed the spotlight thinking it was a muskrat or something and guess what? It was a HUGE catfish splashing around in about a foot of water trying to get at the crawdad shells! It looked to be over 20#, and I'm being conservative. My fishing partners saw it too and assigned it a length of over 3 ft, though what I remember best is its huge whale tail. The light spooked it and it swam off into the deep. Of course I baited up my pole with a shell and cast it right off the bank, but of course it never came back ::)

You'll get him next time guys ;)

Thanks for the pics!

Good report Panfish. Sounds like a blast up there. Were you guys in MB's boat? Too bad you can't use live bluegills in Berryessa because big cats love live bluegills! I have caught decent cats in the Delta on live bluegills, but nothing close to a 25 lber like the one you saw in the lake.

Yea we were in the boat. I think you can use bluegill there as long as you catch them there. maybe thats what we needed to get that cat. :o
I got the cat from the boat.

MB, Do NOT use live bluegill you catch in Berryessa for bait. Beleive me, I have checked the regs on this and read them over and over many times. The only place in Norcal you can use fin fish for bait in the water you catch them in is in the Delta, period.

oh really. thanks. I did not know. I really need to start checking up on this before I get one of those $500 fines I hear about. It wouldn't stop me from fishing but would not be cool. I don't think i would use a bluegill in berryessa anyways but its great to know I cant. I'm sure if it was the same f&g that caught me using gold fish I would be fined. :P
