I caught the mega-slab at Clear Lake on Saturday, December 10th, 2005 in the early afternoon. *The immediate weight was 4.25lbs! (the official California State record is 4.1lbs.)

I made the mistake of keeping the fish out of water in an ice chest for about 5 1/2 hours. He stayed alive when I got him home and put him in water (although he never regained full strength)

I had him weighed officially at Broadway Bait Rod and Gun on Monday December 12, 2005. *by then he was 3.93lbs - less than 2 ounces from the official recordI The fish died 3 hours after it was weighed. *So the official record books will not have my entry.

What I appreciate most is that my dad, (Steve Currington) who is a Crappie fishing expert, said to me on the phone, “I have to pay homage to you son, excellent job” *I have the Fish in the Freezer (vacuum sealed of course) until I have it mounted.

Hey malimd, I heard about you twice last weekend. My buddy Craig at fisherman's warehouse told me about that fish, and my cousin told me about it. he lives in clearlake and fishes Indian Beach a lot.

Anyway, good job man!

Nice fish :o :o
Now thats what i'm talkin' about.
Too bad about the state record thing though :(
Do you think if he would have stayed on the stringer longer it would have made a difference ???
You mean there isn't anyone around the lake with a certified scale ??? bummer :(

thanx,

I had 30 days from the date that I caught him to report it to the DFG. If he had stayed alive, he could have gained the weight necessary to be the official limit.

I learned that I could have taken him to a grocery store that had a certified scale for weighing meat. But remember, I didn't even think of my possibly having a record until I got home :'(

To mike22ca:

Craig and the others didn't beleive that I caught a Crappie that large. You should have seen their faces! ;D

I launched at Indian Beach (BTW, it's a good launching area...costs $10) then headed to Shag Rock.

I'm sorry malimd but that's too big to be a crappie...

I appreciate your comments Bassinator, as I do all of you in this forum. I will be out fishing on Monday. I have not decided if it will be at Lisbon Slough or back at Clear Lake.

Diego, when I first saw that "Super Slab" I, like you, thought the same thing..."this fish is too big to be a Crappie".:D However my surprise was no replacement for the fact. For a few minutes after I caught it, I still felt as if I were in a dream. ;D

Hey way to go on that Crappie, curious what the measurements were on your Crappie, length & girth.
I also caught a slab, a couple of summers ago and never weighed that 1 :( but I did have a replica mount done of it.
It measured 16-3/4 x 13-1/4 Picture of that 1 is back on Photo Pages - Braggin' Rights XXI

Thxs a bunch

The length of that monster slab was 18 inches long and the girth was 18 1/4 inches.

In my expierience with Crappie, it takes a 16 incher (or close to it) to break the 2# mark. I keep hearing storys of guys catching nothing but 2-3 pound fish up there and I believe it's a bit of an exaggeration.

The 16 3/4 incher was most likely close to 3. Heck of a fish for sure ;)

:o WOW good job bro, that fish is a monster. I was out there this weekend trying to catch my wall mount, but i came up a little shy. Sorry about the record but you know what you got and thats all that matters. It must have felt great when your dad handed you the reins and said you are the man. Once again Good job. ;D
