Anyone catch their own smelt for bait and use the for stripers?

YEP SURE DO... They're great for striper bait (I've only tried them live).... Best size for me is 13" and below.... The little larger ones will work also..... Just use a 5/0 - 7/0 hook and rig them like an anchovy and/or you can also run a stinger..... If you're just using the single hook.... LET THEM RUN FOR A BIT (LIKE almost 30 SECONDS) and then LOCK n LOAD....

LIVE Smelt are great bait for stripers. The guys I fish with catch some nice size stripers off them. I use double hook setup with treble size 6 at end. Hook the first hook under mouth to top jaw and treble hook on the bottom belly/butt hole. Halibut LOVE smelt also.

smelt wont last long if u nose hook em like a chove u need to cross hook em thru the nostrils so they can gulp water to get oxygen. old school was double ended chrome sinkers then a leader then live bait knot with a small loop so the bait could swim, but the loop had be small enough to not let the barb go thru the loop hot live greenies
