We have a smelt derby up here in Feb. and the river delta is like a 3 min. boat ride from the dock where the derby is held.

Question(s)...

Think it might be worthwhile if'n I were to anchor up a ways away and play that derby for a Stugie? Or...would it be better to just fish the delta using Smalt for bait? Hmmmmm?????

Ther's a store called Joe's in Lynnwood that sells jars of pickled smelt, pickled herring and rollmop. i've tried using the smelt, cutting them in half so they'd go farther. According to what i've read smelt are a top bait when they're running. do you dip for them yourself?

it would be a kick to catch a keeper in a derby.

I have dipped them but now I'm lazy and jig for them. When they're running a limit can come quick. I was just thinking fresher is better.
