My dog wouldn't stop barking the other day so I went to check it out and saw him in a standoff with this guy.... Snapped a few pics then put him on the guava tree out of reach of the dogs.

I've never seen one hold it's wings out like that before. I wonder it they're damaged? More colorful than I'd thought too. GREAT shots! Wonder how long it took it to change color to green to blend in with the new location?

No Damage, they do that as a defense mechanism...Whenever I catch a mantis, I put it in a little small reptile carrier with twigs and leaves and keep it as a pet for my son. We go to petsmart and get crickets and you should see those things attack the crickets, its awesome. They only live for about a year so, don't feel bad, they have a short lifespan.

No wonder your dog was barking mantis was taking over fido's yellow play burdy....lol

That is super scary! Don't know if I could have been brave enough to pick that thing up.
