Smithstation, U planning on bring a boat ??? ???

smithstation
11-17-2005, 01:25 PM
Ya, I bought a seaswirl striper in July/August and this will be it's maiden delta voyage. Had it out on the lake once to get used to it. A lot different than the 70+mph bass boat I had. I am just thrilled that the wife is up for it and actually looking forward to a fishing trip.

ITUKAWAL
11-17-2005, 02:05 PM
Yeah, what's impressive about Brannon Is. is the sites are big and open. Plenty of room, hot showers close by and I believe there is at least 6 launch ramps. If you want you can moor your rig next to the launch. 24/7 security and all that stuff. Boy, are they going to need that security when 916 pulls in ;D ::) ::)

I was thinking of just sleeping on the boat but after thinking it over I will put the cab-over on the truck and that way we have a good bed, stove, and a fridge for the lime, wife has to have lime with her tequila ;D Hell, the more she drinks the longer I will be able to fish. We may be out all night if she polishes off the second bottle.

ITUKAWAL

Sounds like you got a plan there Smittie ::) ::) Where the boat goes so goes my camper. Saturday night will most likely be the overniter. Friday evening takes care of the formalities. I know this guy 916 who you'll get a chance to meet, you won't need any laughing gas around this dude. IMHO, these guys are a class act unto their own - seriously 8) 8) 8) 8)

Just realized that the 16th I have to attend a company christmas party in the evening, cant get out of it. Got work a sat morning but I will bring the boat to the office with me and should be at Brannon by 11:00am if that works for anyone who wants a seat in my boat. Unless a friend goes I will have room for 2 guys. In the Delta I am primarily a striper fisherman so if one of you sturgeon "experts" wants a seat in my boat that would be great.

Those of you who donít have a seat on a boat by the time of the trip should come down anyway. Most of the time there are last minute cancellations and worse case if we canít get you on a boat thereís plenty of excellent shore fishing spots in the area.

Hey Smith- yes, theres a bat shop on Charter way- coming
I-5 North, you will take Charter Way east (rt) and down on the left side of the road its about about 1.5 miles down- As with most bait shops- its a beat-all-to-hell old building- I dont remember the name- but you shouldnt have a hard time finding it.

Hey guys, I am thinking of coming, but my boat is too small to head out into rio vista, is there many sturgies up the sac river this time of the year to try and hit? If there are any open seats available, let me know as it nows appear I can get free, but I am not up to speed on tactics (its been quite a few years since I fished for them) and only have a nine foot lamiglass to use, probably too light, but I can get a sixty pound fish in with it. Did I mention that I have roe too ;D

Sounds like fun.

I'll try and drag dad out Saturday morning with my boat.

Hopefully these questions are ok.... are you-all planning on making a run for big water from Brannon, or do most of you have good luck around the power lines? I have caught sturgeon a few miles north of the lines in a spot I have marked on my gps, but I am a newbie to sturgeon ( 4) and usually go for stripers at this spot but get both .

No problem if you have a secret spot, just curious to try and learn something from you all, and I know the power lines are a logjam on weekends, and the reason I fish north of them a bit.

I have caught all 4 of our fish on shad, for those who ask about bait.

Also curious, I saw the sign on the kiosk that said $10 launch ( paid $9 with senior discount) but notice the state website says $5.00. Anyone know if it's $5 to launch, or $10 if you are not camping? I think day use factors in there.

Hope to see you there.

ALLEN, go to page #1 for details: Just spoke with Brannon Is. Park Ranger....Nice lady BTW.....$ 15.00 per campsite, boat launch $ 5.00, Birth Mooring $ 14.00 per day....forgot to ask about additional vehicle....No electrical hookup but most sites are good size. Fire rings in most sites. First come first serve this time of the year.

Thanks.

I talked to the In-law and he said he believes day use/ launch is $10, $9 senior discount, and if you are camping $5 is waived for the day-use portion of the $10....

He camps there Easter weekend every year and fishes and said this is what a ranger told him. I should have called him before posting.

If we don't see any of you before launching I will be in my 17' '60 dorsett ( seafoam green top)/ 70 hp yamaha, probably anchored around buoy 18.Some of you old-timers have probably seen my boat before. The old owner was a japanese farmer out of Hood area and used to fish alot from there down to the power lines.

For those of you who havent been to or camped at Brannon it is a nice place. The camp sites are big, all (almost all) have fire rings and picnic tables. The bathrooms are nice and clean and are individual lockable bathrooms and they have showers there. The launch ramp is 6 lanes wide total and is easy to launch at. The park is patrolled by park police and is safe.
The only problem fishing out of the Brannon area is when the winds come up. Venturing out on the main channel in a boat less than a 20' can be hazardous when the winds are high. The good thing is that the winds are generally not a problem in the winter as they are in the summer.
See ya all there.

I may not have all the equipment, but I have most. I have never caught a legal sturgeon. I am very interested in joining a bunch of people who know how to do this, but I was wondering if some of the experts might suggest what bait to bring and what sort of terminal tackle is needed. Then maybe the experts could conduct a demo about how to rig up the tackle and bait and explain what to look for regarding depth, bottom conditions, etc. to have a chance to hook up. Is anybody willing to spend a little time to explain how to approach this type of fishing. I am not looking for the surefire spots, just some info to get started. I do have a 20 foot DC River Angler. Not the best in wide open water, but it will work down there. Maybe an expert who needs a ride would like to go with me.

Keep an eye on this thread as someone will post some of that information. Howdy Ya' All! I just registered and this is my first post. I've been reading all your posts about this bash. It sounds like a real fun time. My brother in law and I have been fishing out of the same launch/park for the past 3 or 4 weekends for stripers with limited success. (lots of fish, very few keepers) The boat we use is a little smal (15 1/2 feet)l for the main channel but might be ok if the wind is not too bad. We are planning on fishing out of there again the same weekend you guys are having your bash. Would love to meet some new folks and try some sturgeon fishing. Might even spend the weekend. Do we need an official invite from one of you or cna we just show up and crash the party? Never landed a leagal sturgeon. Would like to spend some time with those of you who fish for them regularly. Who knows, I might even learn something! Let me know......
Thanks,
Paul

There are 140 camp sites at Brannon. I think that we should agree on a general area to meet/camp/party/hangout, otherwise we may never hook up with each other. Why dont we designate the far end of the camp ground that is next to the launch ramp and parking lot, kind of at the north end of the camp grounds. I believe the camp site numbers in that general area run from from around site 22 to around the 30's or so. At the last bash it was a small area and was obvious where all the sniffers were hanging out but Brannon is large and spread out. Anyway its just a suggestion. What do you all think?
Also what vhf channel to contact each other? how about 68?
I will be there but probably not until 10:30am on Saturday.

Hey WD, People will be trickling in from early Friday morning to noon Saturday. Since the park is first come first serve it's hard to say which would be best area to stack up in. I've always preferred the slough side I guess that would be the west side or the launch side of the park. By the time you get there we should have the wagons pretty much rounded up.

Just look for the ..............http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/4121/starrolling5ez.gifhttp://img261.imageshack.us/img261/4121/starrolling5ez.gifhttp://img261.imageshack.us/img261/4121/starrolling5ez.gifhttp://img261.imageshack.us/img261/4121/starrolling5ez.gifhttp://img261.imageshack.us/img261/4121/starrolling5ez.gif

I personally also like and usually camp on the slough side. I'll just look for stars and pull in. Usually this time of year there are few people camping there so where ever we gether it shouldnt be a problem.

I may not be there until later Sat also. This fog sucks! :-/
How do you deal with the for on the delta? Good GPS and what else? What if your anchor gives in the middle of the night and you cant see the bank? ??? Just a worry from a rookie delta fisherman. :-/

It's shallow, Brian. Real shallow - 29' is a hole in the delta... kinda like fishing the inner shelf of Thunderbolt Bay. At least that's what I've seen so far. But by God there really are some big fish in there, especially for this trout-troller used to fishing in 100' to 400' feet of water.

Quick question how is the bank fishing from the park? ;D

GCinGV
12-09-2005, 08:44 PM
Troutking,
In that stretch of river (powerlines) I like to fish about half way between the edge of the ship channel and the East shore in about 25 to 30 feet. Kind of a big flat area. There are some deeper holes that run along the shore in that area 35 ft or better but I prefer a little further out in shallower water. I particular like to set up between any of those holes thatís along the shore and the main Channel.

As long as the purple clogs are on our boat thatís all that matters. Besides like last time it gets kinda lonely down there sometimes. Plenty of room.

Hey Smithstation - fishing in the Delta at night in the fog can be a challenge. This time of year while fishing at night the main thing you need to be concerned about are large floating debrie like whole tree's floating down the Sac and crashing into your boat and possibly swamping it. You need to have a float on your anchor line and some kind of a snap release so you can quickly detach the anchor rope and get the hell out of dodge if some large object hits your boat. As far as the anchor not holding at night in the fog, if you have a gps you can set an alarm on it so that if you drift a certain distance it will sound off and alert you. The gps will then guide you back to your anchor or where ever you want to go. As well as I know the Delta (and I know it well) I wouldnt venture out there at night or in the fog without a gps.

Hey Known_excuses - I have an idea sniffers will be scattered all over from the power lines, chain island, rio vista bridge, sherman is. area, san joaquin etc. Look for stars on boats. They aint that easy to see so look closely.

Hey RPM - bank fishing from Brannon Is. State Park isnt that good. You will get a lot of shaker striper and some catfish. Never seen a sturgeon caught from the bank there but I assume that they are there.
Lookin forward to the sturgeon bash.

GC,

Donít listen to Frank heís a trouble maker, besides that spot isnít much of a secret anyway but itís plenty big so feel free to come down if you like. Do you have VHF so we can swap reports?
I guess weíll all be on channel 69 the un-official/official sniffer channel.

Frank is definitely a trouble maker. ;D I have spent many of hours in that area and know we can expect a little company. I may split the day between sturgeon and striper. I'm a little overloaded on sturgeon meat after last weekend and a little under supplied on the Striper. I'll be monitoring 68 & 69. Looking forward to seeing you two.

I just ordered 10 eels from that place in Oregon. They will be here Wed. I will individually vaccumme seal them. Anyone want to buy a few? I can bring them Sat. Morning. They are supposed to be 15-20 inches long and about 1/2 inch around, does that sound right? ??? They will cost about 8-10 bucks, I will have to see the invoice. I dont want to make anything but I know I wont use them all so if you want some let me know. *:)

It's time for the time to time offical update were down to 2.5 days or 52 hours, or 187,200 seconds or 187,200,000 milliseconds or .02378963 dog years however ya want to look at it..

If everyone who signed up makes it there will be a Sniffer invasion, I can see it now all these guys running around sniffing and fishing, Brannon will never be the same..

Double check all your gear guys and be prepaired for the weather, remember BIG tides this weekend which mean moving water so be safe, I would suggest that if your a Delta rookie you hang around with some of the more experianced guys just for safty reasons, be sure to have your radios on and check in every once and a while...
