At first I didn't want to put up this post but then I thought that other fisherman will get some insite to fishing with a floatilla party, I don't want to make anyone mad. So I'll shed some light on fishing with a group of guys.
Many times post come up on the board where folks will be fishing at, or a group of guys going to a certain place and as expected other sniffers want to join in the fun.
For the most part I don't mind and usually welcome the company, its also a chance to meet a new face, but beware of fishing in the pack.
First off you might not know the folks who are fishing very well and you need take some time to get to know them before jumping in the middle of things like your long lost buddies, you know break the ice so to speak.
Its bad form to butt right into there spot and drop lines out, its way better to get within talking range first or via VHF and as time goes by you'll know if you can all fish together.
When anchored up we always leave room for the tide to swing the boats around thats why theres 20' or so between boats, it's not so someone can come in between us, like we were expecting company. Some of the fish at the end of the line are really big and it takes alittle space to work these fish without getting fouled on each other.
When the fishing slows down then we will all gang up to gab, have lunch or whatever.
Keep in mind that most of these floatillas are made up of guys who have spent many hours together, know each other and know what to expect from the guy next to him. so honor his space and don't expect to be one of the gang the first time you join in the fun.
I want to say this happens from time to time and the best way to make a fisherman not like you is to mess up his fishing day trying to make friends, If your new to the group start off by attending some of the many sniffer events that happen year round.
The reason for the post stems from this last weekend and I won't go into details but lets just say there was more than one disapointed party involved, and things didn't go well. I haven't met many sniffer guys I didn't like and I'm sure under different conditions the outcome would have been better, so if your going to join in a floatilla just beware of the other boats space and give everyone time to get to know you.. my .02 worth

Ok I read it ;) Sun is 99.99999999% right ;)

We might have been able to let them know first also. They didnt know how we fish nor did they know we were realy fishing rather then floatin. Usualy whne the regs come in Ill say something to the likes of GO AWAY or come on this side or give me a few while I get settled type thing but it all happend so fast none of the above occured and they just barged right in. Now that is wrong too in my book. Yea we kinda didnt warn any body but at the same time could have asked.

Im just wondering, without too many details, was this someone you had met before, or was this a case of seeing the stars on the boat and reading the posts?

All points well made. Ya see floatilla is almost synonomous with party when in fact there is a fine line between serious fishing and just plain floatilla fishin'. The thing to remember is to pack your common sense and be ready to use it, don't leave home without it.

Clam Tossing Tourist-Yet another negative connotation for the clueless angler. Said anglers will have no idea what they are doing, but will no doubt be doing it in such a fashion that they will preclude other anglers from fishing. Also used as a term to describe would be "professional" anglers who really don't have any idea what they are doing when it comes to fishing.

;) ;) ;) ;)

That's unfortunate, but, they're everwhere, they're everwhere. Yeah, even up here in the high country 916. I'm in favor of some new grade school and high school classes called Fishin' Commom Courtesy 101. If you don't pass all 6 classes you don't graduate.

And make ”Boat Ramp Etiquette 101” a pre-requisite.

916 just remember that we all started out as clueless fisherman at one point, and we either had someone take us under thier wing and show us the ropes or we learned by trial and error, thats the point of the thread, these are just some tid bits to help newbies learn the ropes and make them better fisherman.
Not everyone is a natural fisherman some folks need a little help, thats the whole point of the boards ;)

Yeah, GC, boat ramp 101 should be first on the list. Nothing is more of a pain than dealing with dimwits at the launch ramp. :-/

You got that right, everytime I go to the boat ramp I want to start giving lessons on how to put your boat in and out of the water, this shouldn't take more than 40 seconds in and at the most 2 mins to get out, Iv'e sat at the ramp for hours waiting for other folks to get out of the way.

Well guys, I am new to sturgeon fishing and have only fished for sturgeon once (day after merritlanding get togsther). I did'nt get one but did get to help land one. I am pretty much hooked as the fish was! I went out and bought a new rod and reel and am really looking forward to learning about sturgeon fishing and hooking up with one! One of the guy's I met at Merrit's told me, "when you do catch one, you will never want to leave the river"! I have a boat, but I dont think I will bring it untill I get some experience. I will be fine fishing from the bank and I look forward to the party and getting to meet you guys!
