I've been doing quite a bit of research on types and choices..

Evinrude E-tec is by far the most advanced...but yet truly not time tested...

There are alot of claims, alot of guarantees....and they are expanding the hp range up to 225 hp this year, So I hear.

It all sounds great....I'm from Missouri...(not really)

All that said......I'm right on the fence ::)

All the info sounds real good

Just remember when you read all the hype over the new technology 2-stokes that a 2 cycle engine will not last as long as a 4-stroke. They will tell you differently, but it is close to impossible from an engineering perspective. Wear rates are much higher under real world conditions on engines that lack a crankcase .

The advantage of the new 2-strokes is lighter weight. That's about it. Any difference in fuel economy will be small and will be related to the lighter weight of the engines. 2-strokes used to be more reliable because they were simpler in design and had fewer parts. That is no longer the case.

Check out http://www.iboats.com to get some idea of the problems that the opimax engines have had (they do not all have problems)and to keep up to date on the e-tech.

Are you planning on getting a kicker motor? My feminine side likes my motors to match. If the dealer is recommending 115 hp, get 150 hp of whatever brand wins out. ;) ;D My boat is 21' and the dealer tried real hard to sell 115 hp, I went Yamaha 150 hp and I'd hate myself today if I'd gotten 115 hp.

I don't have a feminine side. ;)

I am buying an 18' aluminum and am going with a Yamaha 115 and a Yamaha T8 kicker. I got a lot of help from people on the boards that have used them or know what they are talking about.

Since neither of the dealers he visited offered Yamaha as a recommendation, it told me they were probably afraid of lead time, especially if he wanted a T-8 kicker. It'd probably add 3 months to the delivery of his boat. If a guy can afford to wait, Yamaha will last the forever.
