Okay.... Another post, another question :o

I just started targeting and hooking into some bat rays and found out the hard way how HEAVY they can be, and like dead weight/ a ton of bricks!! lol [smiley=bricks.gif]

I want to know if anybody has any tips or know of the proper way of grabbing these fish up on shore, pier, bank, beach etc. I have a hard time and just handle the big ones while they are still in the water,, and this is kinda scary with all the flappin' they do and whipping with that tail. :-/ I don't want to hurt them but just think it would be safer to get em up out of the water, remove the hook & snap a quick photo and then send em on there way.

any tips would be appreciated

Net them? Umm thats all I usually do. either a normal net or a crab net if your on the pier.If they are to big for your net they usually calm down and stop flapping if you flip them over.If your on the shore try to use the waves to push them up on shore. Also you can pick them up with both hands by the holes on the side of their heads. Or like with this guy I had to land him with a pier gaff http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/425/010ke5.th.jpg (http://img162.imageshack.us/my.php?image=010ke5.jpg) [smiley=bananachaga.gif]

Have you been getting any sharks or just the rays?

They have nostrils on top of their head. Put your fingers into the nostrils and hold your arms straight out. Once you put your fingers in their they might try to contract the nostril holes. It may feel weird at first but your fingers are ok. Lift them up gently - you should see your fingers from the other side in the rays mouth. The nostril holes open up directly into their mouth cavity. They cant bite, so dont be worried.

If I can scrounge up a pic I have of me holding one I will.

They are cool animals, so please just snap a pic and release.

P.S - I've caught 30+ #'rs on 6Lb test. It's all about drag.

I'll find some pics for ya if I can of the ray's I've done battle with in my tube.

watch out for the stinger! they regenerate and a little skill and some pliers takes it right out. be careful or youll just fillet their backside with the wrong kinda pull. :o

Stick your fingers or hands in its mouth. They don't have teeth, just crushers. Even the big 100+ pounders don't have enough strength to crush your hand. I don't recommend picking them up by the nostril holes or whatever they are. If you do, the stinger will be pointing towards you. I'm dead serious about sticking your hands in it's mouth. I do it all the time. I wouldn't tell you to do anything that would hurt you.

I usually just pull them up to shore and unhook them in the water. I have never tried to pick up a big one for a pic.
