These are stocked trouts. My brother and I wetted lines around 8.45am and went home at noon. Took 6 home and released 2 smaller ones.

What's up with this fish that I circled? It was brown when it was caught but after I brought it home, I noticed it got really brown. Also, it was really soft, while the others were stiff. Should I throw it away, or cook it?

i would toss him not that big anyway better safe than sorry where did you catch them looking to take my son

You probably shoulda put the last 4 back since they're minnows. The other two look OK.

The brown one....I'd chuck him for sure. Or give him to a neighbor. ;)

Might be a spawning male??? I have caught them like that??? It should be ok to eat....I would make that choice after cleaning it...if it looks ok then it should be fine. They look like "pond" fish??Nice report!!!

a lot of the lassen trout seem to end up looking like that

I agree with Reel Fun. Looks like a spawning male.

I wouldn't eat that. That one aint normal looking
Could cause food poisoning

the fish is fine, alot of stockers look like that. there is nothing wrong with the fish

Thanks for the suggestions. The big one is 14.5 inches and was also the first one caught. The smallest one was 10 inches. Caught 2 around 9 inches and was released. Yes, I should have tossed that little one back, but if I did, it will only be caught by another angler who might take it home also. Anyways, I ended up tossing that dark one away. I've already have the other 5 so tossing that one away wont hurt. Next time if I catch another dark trout, I'll just release it back.

Was it that dark when caught??? Usually they turn that color after being in the ice chest all day??

it was caught dark. At first glance when it was still in the water, I thought it was a german brown but turns out to be a rainbow with a muddy color.

Good thing you didn't keep it. Never trust a bunch of fisherman telling you what to eat...at the same time, there are probabably a bunch of the same people on a different site making bets on whether or not you get ye olde fish runs from that dead frog ;D.
