I just picked up a Penn, 2 speed reel (GLD30 11) for mexico next year. I fought a big Tuna last year with a single speed reel for over and hour and couldn't land him. I going equipped with my own gear next time. I was thinking of loading the reel with 50lb mono, but need suggestions on good, stand up rod in the #30-#50 range.

Hello Ron
on long range trips what I have seen has been most guys are using Seeker,Calstar, and GLoomis rods.I have all three ranging from 30-80lb and I have had great luck with my 50lb outfit with a TLD30II loaded with 65lb braid and a 50 mono topshot. As for picking a rod.First fill your reel with your choice of line and mount it on different rods that you are considering and see how they feel and the balance that each one has. If its just for trolling balance may not matter as much but if its a live bait or chunk rod than how it feels in hand will make a world of difference.
Good luck
