View Full Version : Tahoe Big Brown & Broken lure..

I'd was very cold this AM on Tahoe. A pretty stiff NNE wind made the dawn AM topline trolling pretty miserable, even on the east side. Starting on the east side close to Skunk Harbor, after a few laps with plugs, I went to pull my minnow trap which was snagged - an end separated when it finally broke loose, so no minnows. I decided to call it an early day, but stop at one spot on the way back to Cave. I had just gotten both rods set, when one of them went off. When I got to the rod and gave a couple of tentative pulls, I could tell it was a big fish, but it wasn't doing much. I kept the line taught while I reeled in the other rod and then began coaxing this guy toward the boat, which wasn't that difficult, since it began swimming in that direction. When I got up to the topshot (~50'), I loosened the drag - just in case. Pretty soon, this guy came into view:

When I saw it was a big brown, I figured the fight wasn't over yet and I was right - a few more pulls toward the boat it it came alive, diving/running for the next 4 - 5 minutes. Eventually, I got it along side:

I figured about 5 - 6# male. A couple more runs and he gave up:

Even when it was in the water, I could tell that it was only hooked deep in the mouth on the rear hook. When I got it in the net, it started thrashing like crazy - I think that's when the rear hook and ~1/2 inch of the lure broke off. I tried to extract the hook from inside it's mouth, which I was finally able to do, but it left a real mess. I decided to keep it. Here's the fish and broken lure - 7.5# on my Bogagrip scale.

This guy was caught in 22 FOW with the Luckycraft Slender Minnow in Rainbow trolling 2.5MPH over rockly area - one of my favorite topline plugs.
We're beginning to see some good Browns and Bows being caught - should get even better of the coming weeks.

Beautiful Brown. It was 16 this morning down in the Carson Valley. Certainly not any warmer at lake level. Thanks for the info.
