After fishing Caples last weekend and during the week I decided to fish the "puddle" once again over the 25th and 26th. Caples although not what it once was is still bigger then it's neighbor Red Lake to the East. It is now 20 feet deep at it's deepest and the average depth is a little over 10 feet. Fished down from the resort and for the two days caught 11 Brooks, 9 Browns, 5 Macks and 1 Bow. Used Jigs, Raps and Kastmasters. All my fish were caught on a 1/4 oz gold Kastmaster.

Saturday 10/25

Arrived Caples a little before 7 AM. Met with Fellow Sniffer Atavuss and walked the 1/2 mile down to the lake. Arrived to find another Sniffer, Mr. Striper, his lady and some friends all ready there. They said they had been getting some on various jigs and such and promptly showed us by getting a nice double off the rocks. Mr. S. with a Mack and his lady with a fat Brook. I hooked a Brook in the 18 to 20 inch class right by the shore but farmed it off. As soon as the sun peaked over the mountain I switched to the Kastmaster and started getting hits at a steady pace. Atavuss using a KM was getting into them as well. It was a beautiful day with little or no wind and we were down to shirt sleeves by 9 AM. Mr. Striper and his crew left to fish Red and I stayed on until around 10:30 for a few more Brookies and a couple of small Browns. Stopped briefly at Red and Caught up with Mr. Striper and another Sniffer Untalan1. Mr. Striper had caught a nice Cutt. Took Mr. Striper and his crew down to the W. Carson but couldn't find a good place to fish. Mr. Striper headed back to Caples and I headed home.

Sunday 10/26

Arrived at 7 AM and went down to the lake. This morning I had it all to my self. It was a different morning. It was not cold but there was a steady wind blowing from the East. Started out with a jig but managed to snap it off on the rocks on the first cast. Switched to a KM. I got no hits until the sun came up. My first fish was a small Brown. Shortly after this Untalan1 arrived. We fished and talked a while and the trout fishing turned on just before 9:00. Untalan1 caught a Brown then his first ever Mack. I started getting steady action on Brooks and Browns. I fished until 12:30 and left Untalan1 and others down there and returned home.

It was a wonder fish filled weekend. It was nice fishing with you again Atavuss. It was nice meeting you Little Ed. Mr. Striper, once again you showed us how to fish. Nice meeting you and your lady once again. Untalan1, thanks for the Cod and the Swiss army knife. I'm sure we will all meet again before the ice and snow covers all.

Great pics CC those fish make me wish I was there. Good to see that other sniffers were there to add to the enjoyment of the day. That ramp pic is awesome and I hope it is easily accessed in the future....Jetspray

That was indeed wierd. :o I remember you losing them last weekend. Have you had the Crawdads yet?

not yet, I put the smallest ones in the fish fountain and will BBQ the bigger ones tomorrow.

Glad to see you guys are stinging some macks. I think they would make some nice fish tacos. Keep at it, and maybe a big one will be in the cards.

several weeks ago I had a 24 to 30" Mack on but it was way too big for my net........while I had it up to the shore and I was trying to figure out what to do it broke my snap open and swam off with my lure in its mouth. :o I have lost count of how many Macks I have caught and released over the last 3 or 4 weeks. *everyone says they taste horrible but I will keep a small one to fillet and BBQ to try out. *

Where's the best place to park now that the lake is so low?

Just outside the chain to Caples Resort just west of the dam there is fisherman access parking. Don't block the construction access road. You can also park on the dam. You will have to walk a bit. ;)

Ahh, what nice fish.

Once again your weekend catch eclipses mine. I don't think I'll bother with a report this time...not many repsonses to the little fish in my last one. Gotta get a biggie to stir things up around here. :-/

Fished this weekend with my bro-in-law and his bubby.Drove up from the Pacifica on sat. and hit up Red on the way to my place at the Ranchos ,arrived about 8:30 and stated throwing jigs for a few hours for little to nothing for bites. Finally the bite somewhat turned on about 12 pm but missed quite a few due to short bites.Left with 3 for the table about 2:30 .Met theCapt and MR Striper and talked fish before leaving.Talked to another a guy that showed up at red and after talking to him we realized that his sister is my neighbor in Pacifica he moved up ther in 2001 and lives around the corner from me in the Ranchos.Boy! what a small world.Hey Mr Striper you may know him he fished the beaches for stripers his name is Jim Schembri he drove that 64 chevy window panel.Next day on sun met up with CC and as the capt said the bite was pretty decent threw lures from about 8 am to about 3:00,I caught my first ever mac it was 21" and fought very hard for such a slender fish. Ended the day with a little slam 1 mac,1 brook,1 rainbow and one brown would have tried for the grand slam but ran out of time to get back to bbq a tri -tip.Left on mon and hit Caples on the way back to the bay area got there at 9:30 and fished till 12:30 ended up with 10 fish with an assortment of fish.My Bro-in-law lost a really nice mac it was about 30" lost at the net.Great weekend up in the sierras with great company , now back to the grind until next time.Efren

Thanks, John

Well guys sounds like a great weekend, I am back from the great not so white North. Salmon poor but the Steelies were a blast and readily available.
Wish I could make a trip up this weekend if the storms hold off. I will have to see if I can find a way to sneak up.
That rock sure looks to be producing quality fish in a variety of species.

It was GREAT to see everyone this weekend. I did end the day with a Sierra Slam. I think it's my first :-/. Anyways, I think things are still just a bit warm for the #'s Im use to getting up there.

Take care all and CC, dont lose your golden jigs ;).

Have to work in Tahoe next Wed morning. Thinking about driving back down toward Caples or Red. Is it worth bring my inflatable pontoon or just shore fish?

Mackattack, I started bringing my big rubber net that I use on my boat, sure wish I had it when I had that big Mack on!

10-28-2008, 08:25 PM
Thanks CC, looks like the pontoon might not be a good thing. Will just play it by ear and maybe get lucky at Red.

Having fished Caples for quite a few years now I thought I knew a lot of the surroundings, looking at the pics that are being posted I am not familiar with the grounds you all are standing on due to the immense drop in water levels, I have yet to see Caples in person since the big drain and was hoping to make at least a visit there next weekend after a trip to Silver but now with the oncoming storms and snow that are expected for the hills next week and weekend I'm not sure if I will make it back up the hill before the big snow dumps. I guess I can always wait for Kirkwood ski season and swing by then. Will be looking for some Ice reports (or lack there of) for next weekend, a little snow while fishin doesn't bother me but Ice in the water is not good.
