View Full Version : Donner AM/Martis PM 5/3; Martis 5/4

Hopped in my canoe and paddled around half of donner lake for nothing but exercise. *I really was out of my element and had no confidence in what I was doing. *I towed a black wooly bugger tweaking it a bit. *Also tried it under a bobber. *There were eight or so boats out trolling, most of which left before noon, and some bankies near boat ramp. *One guy said he caught a planter on a crawler. (planted on weds)
Packed up and moved to Martis lake and threw a jigger bug from the bank. *Fifth or so cast something huge took off with my offering, then stopped and went slack, thought it broke off, then realized it was running at me, took up slack for one more reel scream and then it broke. *WHOOW........ I was stunned. *Oh well, what can you do. *Fished the afternoon for two browns landed, four fish lost. *Nobody there except one gentleman fly fishing. *He had no luck as of when I left. Word around town is that the fishing is not what it used to be. *And they're not sure why. *Also the dams integrity is in question :-/
Sunday, I went back. *Couldn't shake the thoughts of the big one that got away and the four I lost. *Went out jigging in the canoe. *Casting, while drifting with the wind for two browns and a cutt. *Thunderheads and wind drove me to the bank where I caught two more browns before the torrent came over the mountain and sent me running to get the canoe lashed to the rack and into the truck before a soaking. *Sat 2 for 6 and sun 5 for 5. *strange how it goes. *Martis was a very fun barbless C&R experience even if it's not the hottest thing around anymore. *The browns all looked healthy except one with a small round lesion, and the cutt had two small lesions, one visible on it's side in pic.

Great report Fishwish. Beautiful pictures. Nice to hear a report about Martis. I remember fishing the place when it first opened a long time ago. I want to get back there soon.

Where is Martis Lake ?

Martis is east of Truckee south of 80 just off Hwy 267 that goes to Northstar and Kings Beach. Just East of the Truckee Airport.

Great pics, Fishwish. Looks like you had a rather strange weekend fishing. I too, was wondering where Martis was until i read other replys to your post.

Good to see a report on Martis. *I was going to fish it once, I even launched my powerboat on it, and then the ranger (or whatever she was) told me no powerboats allowed. *Kind of makes sense, but I had seen a driftboat using an electric trolling motor on it before. *It was a tuff launch, and I should have read the rules before I backed my boat down the bank. (not even a real boat launch) *So long story short, I never have fished it. *Glad to see there are some fish in there. *I kind of wonder how much longer the lake will be there. *It really doesn't store much water anymore, seeing that the dam is leaky. *I think they keep it at minimum pool unless its flooding. *It really isn't surving much of a purpose. *They are to afraid of putting water in there even when they need to.
