I'm think'n if I had used a knot other than the Rapala knot I might have not lost em so easily! Spoes the there's a reason why they recomend those WIMPY knots ??? >:(

You've got that right wetdog ;D heck the granny knot holds better ;) but "if you're not dragging the bottom and losing gear, you're not fishing" Words of wisdom from Mark Wiza ;D ;D ;D Of course he gets most of his stuff free :P

Easy now Mick; I pay for the Rapalas 'just like regular folks'. I don't like the Rapala knot either though. Palomar knot is the way to go for strength, and the fish don't seem to notice the difference. Interestingly, the Rapala Countdowns I ordered this year came with split-rings, which I've never seen before on Rapalas. Obviously this would mean there is no need for the Rapala knot on these models,

I just use a #3 duolock wire clip with F13 and F18 raps. I color the wire with a black sharpie pen. But of course I'm not a Trophy Brown Fisherman. ;D

Isn't the palomar a snug-type knot as opposed to a free-swinging knot? I just started trolling sticknbaits this year and am confused which way to go.

Yes, a palomar is a tight snugged knot. Might be a good idea to use a Duolock snap like Doc talked about and tie it on with a palomar. That way you have a strong palomar knot and a free swinging rapala. Be sure to use a small enough Duolock so it doesn't overwhelm the action of the Rapala. It's a good idea to check the action of the Rapala in the water next to the boat to be sure that the size of the snap is ok. The smaller the Rapala, the smaller the snap.. Larry

I use the duolock snaps for everything too....I buy the black ones though Doc ;)

LMAO on that one GVF.

Palomar knot? Duoloc? Where did I read about that topic in the last week ??? The Palomar and Duoloc work great for me. And the split ring works even better... in many cases.
