* Me and my family just got back from our annual trip to the Donnor Lake Village Resort in Truckee. We stayed there for 6 days, and we had a great trip. We swam, fished in the lake, went rafting, went out on a charter boat on Tahoe for Mackinaw, and just hung out in the hot sun.

*Donner is such a pretty lake in the morning and evenings, when the water is glassy calm and coated with a layer of mist. However, during the day, the lake becomes a zoo containing tons of people and way too many water skiers. I noticed that there are a lot more people here than there have been on my previous trips.

*The fishing at Donner was slow at best if you got up early enough or fished the evening bite. During the day, forget it. It was way too hot and the water skiers were hell. In 6 days we caught only 5 trout! All were caught on Power Bait except for one that I caught on a firetiger Krocodile. We released all the trout except for a couple. They tasted great!

*It seemed this year that the trout fishing was not very good, but the Mackinaw fishing made up for that. We caught 6 Mackinaw, all over 20 inches except for one 17 incher, all off the shore! They were HARD fighing fish, and their air bladders did not inflate. Most of the Mackinaw were caught on live minnows (Speckled Dace), and 2 were caught on power bait. I was so surprised to get so many Mackinaw off the shore. Usually we get one or two every year but not this many, and not as big. We released all the Mackinaw except for 2 fish, which we barbequed. Pictured is the smallest fish. I did not want to waste time releasing the other ones, as I have found that Mackinaw are very fragile.

Minnows were hard to catch this year. I got only Speckled Dace and Tui Chubs, no redsides. Does anyone know how to catch minnows in this lake? One dace we caught was HUGE. It was about 4 inches long! I trolled it around for a while in the morning and hooked a nice fish that came loose.

*We booked a charter for Mackinaw aboard the Kingfisher on Tahoe. It was really fun. We each caught our limit of 2 fish, and they were nice ones, too. We caught the fish with a very interesting technique. We bottom bounced with leadcore line and flashers with minnows at depths to 160 feet. When we felt a fish, we were told to reel in slowly. So slowly, that it took 15 minutes or more to reel in a fish. It was tedious, but gave you a lot of time to feel the Mackinaw fight. And they fought pretty hard! Pictured is the best limit out of our group of 4.

*This trip gave me my first chance to test out my first boat. Its a Sea Eagle 8 inflatable. I was very impressed with it. It was a very effective flatlining machine. I hooked many fish trolling but never landed any, and don't know what they were. I can't wait to use this boat again!
The Minn Kota Endura 30 pushed it along at a nice speed, yet was slow enough to troll with.

*We had a great time and were all sad to leave. I can't wait until next years trip. Hopefully the fishing will be a little better than this year, but I'm not complaining about it. We just got home and are getting ready to eat some Mackinaw fillets right now!

Great report. My family and I stay at Donner Village a few times a year and it's a terrific spot. Over the years I've caught more fish off the docks there than from my boat! We're going up there in a few weeks so...two questions: where did you find the bait fish you found; and were the Macks caught off the docks at the resort? What were you using for them? OK that's three questions. Sorry!
