Made the two hour drive to Ione this morning to chase some turkeys. I figured this break in the weather would make it a good day and boy were those gobblers active. Heard turkeys gobbling in the distance the minute I stepped out of the truck. Went to my spot and set up, had some responses but no go. Moved about 100 yards and saw 5 jakes. No time to set up as I had to drop behind some brush right away or they would have seen me. Gave them a few yelps and they went crazy. Only problem was a big wall of brush to my right that I couldn't shoot through...Of course that is the direction they went as they had no decoy to target. They got within about 35 yards and I thought about standing up and taking a shot but I thought better of it. It was early and I had heard plenty of turkeys and decided not to risk spooking all of them. I let them walk off and get out of site and then backed out there. I decided to make a large loop around them because I had a pretty good idea where they were heading, and I knew there were more turkeys around. Walked for about 30 minutes and the set up on the opposite ridge. Good choice because after another 30 minutes or so here came those jakes, who had now joined a larger group of turkeys. I started calling and then the fury began. Some more jakes came in on one side and then a couple of big Toms came cutting through the middle. Once the bigger of the two got to within about 20 yards I dusted him. Lesson learned for the day was to be patient, use my brain, and I ended up with a much bigger bird. Great day to be out. .

Here is where I was before I moved...Batteries went dead after this pic.

Thanks for the Kudos everyone. Having a Turkey cautiously strut in is an adrenaline rush that is tough to match. So many things can go wrong, it is nice when a plan comes together.

Great job on waiting, patience pays, especially with turkey hunting. Hey I'd like to come and shoot a Cali Bird! Anyone got a place I can go? I'm looking within 4 hr. drive from Reno. Killed my share of Nv. birds but have never hunted over there. P.M. me if someone has a spot to share, i can return the favor, if their coming my way. Big game, waterfowl, upland, we do it all here!
