View Full Version : wild turkey on the table

Had to work for it today but ended up running into one. didn't see near the turkey's I usually do and they weren't in their usual locations. After about 3 hours of searching, sitting, listening, I spotted a small group feeding along the edge of some oaks about 300 yards away. Pretty cool to watch them feed because they were feeding right next to a doe bedded down. No calling story today, this group was silent and not interested. Usually on this property I can at the least locate them in spring or fall by calling. Not today. They were out of their normal pattern and very scattered. Today's hunt was a good old spot and stalk. I looped around and above them and was able to get close enough to this young Jake to bring home dinner. Not a big Tom like my spring bird, but he'll taste good surrounded by stuffing and gravy ;)

Way to go Dude! I don't know much about Turkey Hunting, but from what I have seen and read from you, if I ever go - you will be the one I will ask. You are THE Man!

Congratulations again.

Nice Job Hof,

I'm looking to take my 9 year old boy out for his first shot at a fall Thanksgiving Turkey....I hope we find your kind of success.

Thanks Big Game. Shhhhh, don't tell anyone this but the secret is to get really lucky to have a friend who doesn't hunt much and manages some property in Ione that is loaded with Turkeys  I've learned a lot hunting that property but gotta admit...when you are the only one that hunts it the odds tend to sway in your favor. I know that when they hear a call, it is the first time they have heard it since the last time I was out there. Still those ugly birds outsmart me more than I would like to admit. When i first started hunting out there I sounded so bad I called in two coyotes and zero turkeys.

Schatgun - Good luck taking the little one. I almost took my 5 year old with me but decided to wait until the spring. In the fall sometimes I just have to cover too much ground for him to handle. Good luck when you go!
