2011 is over and the numbers are in. On the negative side both the quantity of fish caught and the number of fishing trips are down for me. This is due to health problems in the spring and summer and high water conditions due to heavy runoff in the spring well into summer. Because of a fish kill at Red Lake and new stocking rules by the DFG I caught no brook trout in 2011. The Carson River and Indian Creek Res. that usually provide the Majority of the Brown trout I catch provided none this year. On the positive side the number of quality fish caught are way up. Two new PBs for river bows and a new PB on bait lead a good year for bigger fish. On 70 fishing days I caught 332 trout of these 89 were quality fish. The West Carson provided great fishing from late August until closing including two river PBs of 8 1/4 and 10 1/2 pounds. ICR provided good numbers and some nice trout including a new PB on bait of 7 pounds. Topaz was ok but access was some what limited by high water.

Although 90 miles away Pyramid Lake provided the best fishing for me this year. Either trolling or fishing the drop offs from the shore I received a skunk on only one day. I froze my butt off, got my truck stuck a couple of times, fished with some good folks and caught some real nice fish. Couldn't ask for more.

The following is a break out by number and type.

Best Fishing Day

Lots of good fishing days this year. There were two good days trolling ICR with Atavuss and Untalan1. The Fall Pyramid Fest was notable for 4 outstanding days trolling with Jetspray. A very memorable mini shorefest on Pyramid at Block House fishing with Jetspray, Bigdewy, Mariahpup, King Kong, Mongo and others in early February where the shore cutts came fast and furious.

The best fishing day of the year for me was September 2. The day started at the 89 bridge on the West Carson River fishing with Atavuss. We got 5 nice fish in a couple of hours but with the sun came the crowds. We decided to move down stream to the White Bridge in the middle of the canyon where we found Mariahpup and Marinpaul and his son Jake. The first big trout came from Jake Around 10# then Atavuss got a 10# bow. Mariahpup got a nice bow of over 8 pounds then Marinpaul got a 9# fish. Next I got one of 10.5# and finally Atavuss got second 10#+ fish. Along with the big boys we got many fish in the 3# - 6# class. It was like a war zone on that small river. An awesome day.

The great advantage of belonging to an on line fishing community is meeting and fishing with new people. In 2011 here are some I met and fished with.

2012 looks to be a mixed year. I suspect that Pyramid will continue to shine. The fish are fat and healthy. They are fighting harder than any time that I can remember. There is lots of feed available. Barring any bad decisions by the DFG the Carson River and Indian Creek should remain good. Topaz Lake has lots of fish and I hope to fish it more than last year. Red Lake remains a question mark. Without the stocking of brookies I don't believe it will be a good fishery. Hopefully Caples will provide better fishing and the work on Carson Pass is complete. Hope to fish more on the W. Walker water conditions permitting. My goal for 2012 is to find some brookies and browns.

Hope you all have a Happy New Year.
