View Full Version : New Melones....I Love You...

Hit New Melones w/ RideNfish again today….Met at O-dark thirty in Oakdale and were fishing by 0655 hours. Left the Tuttletown Ramp w/ Doug screaming nonsense at BassBoy as we passed by him…He said he had already picked up two fish (nice job BassBoy, or should I say TroutBoy?) From the ramp we headed straight to Angels Cove in hopes of a brown early in the day, No Brown. We did pick up a couple of planter trout in there. Today was my first day with the new sideplaner set –up. We did a lot of trial and error type fishing to figure out the most effective / efficient way to work that bad boy and by the end of the day I think we worked out most of the bugs and figured out the routine.
After picking up a few fish in Angels Cove we shot out to Glory Hole Point for two passes with zero results. We then shot over to West Bank and South Lake for the remainder of the day. Working the banks w/ the side planer. Its crazy how far we can send that thing to the bank and how close we can get to it.
Overall we had a good day….We each got our limit. Towards the end we kept the kept fish count at 8 by releasing a few in hopes of getting into something big…..Didn’t work out that way for us….the big boys did a good job of eluding us so we kept the last 2 we caught for an even limit.

The weather was incredible….mid to hi 60’s during the day….but the morning was very cold.

Score for the day…..10 fish kept between the two of us….I believe we released 3 maybe 4, 3 or 4 LDR and one SDR.

What we used………(what got hit, not necessarily boated)
Hot Steel Rapala on the sideplaner…..hottest lure of the day = 6 fish
UV slingblade / popsicle Excel spoon …..top line and at 5’…..second hottest of the day = 4 fish
UV slingblade / hot pink excel……11’ ………. = 3 fish
UV watermelon dodger / chrome Apex ……….. = 1 fish
Green slingblade / humdinger …………… = 1 fish
UV slingblade / cripplure…………. = 2 fish

Thanks again RideNfish….always a treat….the bananas kept us on the fish….and I think my new banana skin flashers were the key to our success today (LOL).

I think its time to try a fishing a new lake next time ….Don Pedro?......McClure?........

t-shirts? in January?

The sideplaner buzzing the bank....
The days bounty......

Had a great time with Schatgun on the water! We had awesome weather and even got to warm. The fishing was a bit slower that last time so I guess we didn't bring enough bananas. :) SG already gave all of the catching details that he is so good at. I will just share some pics of our outing.

We gave a shout out to BassBoy209 as Schatgun mentioned. Would of loved to chat but we had some water to shred.

This is about the third fish of the day and the first one for me to reel in. Do I look like a Gangsta or what? :winkfs:

We apparently did not bring enough bananas on the trip otherwise we would of found the large pig today. We tried the "banana peel attractor" and everything.

Schatgun soaking in the rays and waiting for our next bite. A tremendous captain he is...

Here is his new side planer hard at work. He mentioned in his post about getting it close to shore. Hell, we got it ON shore a couple of times. It would bang and bump until it came out of the rocks. Would of loved to get that on video but...

The captain and his crew (The captain is on the left and is better look'n :)

Schatgun landing on of several we caught. They were nice bright fish and just enough activity to keep you watching the rods. Look at the side planer working in the background.

The day is called to a close at the cleaning station. I had a great time and since he posted a pic of me with the fish here he is instead. I was honored to break in his trophy hanger. I didn't know it was the first use.

Thanks again Schatgun and I would be happy to slay Don Pedro with ya!!

Way to slay 'em at NM.

Kinda o' cool the way you guys make this board and forum work.
Networking and sharing ideas. What a concept. LMAO

RnF, it was good to see you the day before when you dropped off those FINE fish you caught from the Merced River (Forebay).
They will go in the smoker Sunday.
Are you like, fishing EIGHT days a week now?

Hey schatgun, did RnF show you his NEW pole that Santa brought?

Great report and pictures, thanks for the thread.

I love sharing what I've learned...especially if it helps someone else have a happy and productive fishing experience. I have the luxury of fishing once a week (still not enough in my book but I'll take what I get) and I know others are not as fortunate w/ whatever endless obligations and responsibilities they may have. So what ever info I can provide that may make those trips as positive as possible I'm all for it.

These lakes are large enough and have plenty of fish for everyone (except Amador, which also requires spending your childs college ed money just to get on the water [yes I'm biased]).

I'm gonna venture to another lake next time out....Don Pedro or McClure....I'll be sure to share what I've learned there too....hopefully I'll be just as successful..if not no biggee...I love being out & learning new water regardless.

Side note......this is the first time I've kept trout in probably 6 years....I had too many friends nagging at me for fresh fish and ready to lynch me for releasing them all...It will be another long time before I keep more....usually take a quick pick of the fish if its pic worthy then release it...thats why I love the boga grip, no handling of the fish and successful release 99.9% of the time.

Happy Fishing...
