On Saturday, a buddy and I drove up to Portland to sturgeon fish with Paul Ambrose. When we got to the hotel, the wind was at least 25mph. The Columbia River had huge white caps. It was nasty and cold. We thought there was a good chance we would just have to turn around and drive back. That evening we went out to diner and it started to snow, not heavy but snow! When we got up to fish on Sunday my car had about 4 inches of snow on it but the wind was fine. We met up with Paul and he said that Saturday the he had several waves break over the bow and that it was a tense trip back to the launch ramp. Paul explained that just because it the wind was not blowing now that it could change in an instant. He stated we could fish as long as it remained safe. There were four fishermen, a fisherlady, Paul and second guide to help with the rods and anchor chores. I did not bring boots, big mistake. By the end of the day I had purple toes. Fishing on the Columbia with huge snow flakes coming down was a sight to see, unreal.

Two boats were at our first anchor spot. We slid in between them. Everyone was friendly. Within about 5 minutes after getting 6 poles out we got our first sturgeon. From then on it was pretty steady. For the day we caught about 60 sturgeon ! Most in the 30-40 inch range (nose to fork). I canít wait to try the Paulsí technique here. The other two boats eventually left (I saw them catch 5 or so between the two of them :bananadevil:). We left a bit later in search of larger fish. The wind came up but Paul managed to keep us on fish.

The fisherwoman had fished with Paul before and she could talk trash just as good as any of the guys. Fishing with Paul was worth the 20 hour drive not just because of the fish but because he was fun to be around and he explained what he was doing and why. We plan on going back in June for the big ones (7-12 footers).

I highly recommend Paul to anyone that wants a professional guide and non stop fishing action.

60+ sturgeon a day sounds like a dream. i've watched Paul's clip on Angler West and it's definitely a trip that is on my "bucket list."
