View Full Version : 2 Days Out of Moss

Headed down to Prunetucky with my buddy Mike Friday afternoon and hit some early traffic from Morgan Hill on. By the time we got to Moss the boat was already in the water at the dock waiting for us so we brought our gear down and hung out on a buddy boat. A bottle of wine and a visit from a black cat I was a little worried for the Saturday opener. Woke up at the but crack and headed out the jaws with about 100 boats in front of us. On the boat were Tom, Mike, myself and a Guy named Bumper who fishes sockeye in Alaska but doesn't know not to bring bananas on the boat.
First the cat then the yellow fruit strike 2 but fortunately it is 3 strikes and you are out. Made it out 10 miles and dropped chovies on crippled herring/silver flasher combo on 1 side and hoochie with green hot spot the other encompanied with gold/silver spoon. Lot of bites on the bait from 100 feet all the way up to 20 feet. 2 caught on gagiki or hoochie and no love on the spoons. Once it started it was almost over. 2 doubles and mostly singles every 10-15 minutes. Done by 8 and home for the barbeque by 12. http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab4/GNappers/IMG_0608.jpg
Mike sashimied 1 of the carcasses and I whipped up a little soy sauce, lemon juice, oj, vinegar and chopped onions for some fresh salmon tar-tar.
Opening day picture came a little late but a head and tail shot is better then no shot at all.

Day 2 Easter Sunday was not as quick but we still got some fish. Same setups as Saturday and most bites on the bait. We released 1 undersize and missed a few bites, 1 bite where the ball dropped but the bait was barely scratched. Had another 20 feet down bite that came off. Saturday the radio was not connected to the antenna and we nailed them, Sunday we tried many depths and picked up and ran a bunch. Fish were caught from 50-120 feet down, and we ended around 4.
Heading back to Moss
Only 3 of us today and 2 of the fish were around 26 inches but the rest of them for both days were between 8-12 pounds.
2 fish limit per person, no silvers which have white mouths, no spots on back and taste great with a butter garlic sauce. I also hear you can tell the difference if you look at the tails. Kings are shaped like a V and silvers are flat. 24 inch minimum and some of the fish were stuffed with chovies and most of our bites came on chovies.

Great report! Sounds like the opener was "wide open" this year from Monterey all the way up to Bodega. Talked to a couple friends who went out of Bodega on Saturday and had their limits before noon.
