Seon and I got back from over nighter at Bodega last night targeting salmon. We gave it a shot Monday afternoon, but the wind came up (who would have guessed that) so we called it and went back to the camp ground (West Side). CJ came by to say hello and had a couple brews.
We were up early Tuesday morning went to the launch area, made coffee and had something to eat, launched and headed out
A little fog with a slight breeze, visibility wasn’t bad

Poor Seon was kind of snake bit for the day, I felt bad for him.
This is how the day went. We motored out past our 17/7 area in search of bait, when we got to the 300 ft line we started marking bait. Dropped the lines in, after a little while I get hit at 25 feet, I’m playing fish, Seon set the boat to go in a wide circle, grabs the net, makes a stab at the fish and the hoop of the net comes off, and the salmon spit’s the hook. Now what do we do, were out there so we keep fishing. Then Seon noticed he couldn’t tighten the drag on his NEW reel, no problem grab the backup with another NEW reel, same problem (couldn’t believe it). So he takes the reel off the rod he uses for rock cod. Then he starts to drop it in when the end of his DR rod breaks in two. Swaps rods ties on a rsk

Starts dropping it in and catches a nice one

Wrong species
Tossed it back, get baited up and get back to fishing. After some time I hook up again, this time I get it to the boat and Seon quickly grabs the line and with a swift motion, pulls it in the boat, a quick measurement (24”) in the bucket goes (the

I get a shaker, then Seon got a shaker. Then after a lull I noticed Seon’s rod is bouncing. I yell “FISH ON” Seon grabs his rod and the clip doesn’t release. We get the down rigger up and noticed his line is wrapped around the ball, and the main line is broken. At that point I thought Seon was going to toss his rod and reel in the drink. He said SCREW IT, I QUIT”
I said “lets go rock cod fishing” Seon said “ No we came for Salmon so keep fishing”
I did, and after a lull, I get hooked up with a decent fish, I cranked it in, now how are we going to land the fish, then it was like a Chinese fire drill. I hand the rod to Seon, grab the gaff, the fish goes around the DR line we get it free, lift the ball into the boat, with one motion, gaff the fish and pull it into the boat. conk it and into the gut tray it goes.

Tried for another but the wind started to come up, so we called it a day.
All in all we had a good outing. Thanks again Seon!

That's a bummer, since we fished Moday and it was awesome and we looked for a place to stay but could not find a hotel that I could park my rig at. Monday morning we had limits of fat 20 plus pounders. We farmed 7 fish and let back several around 24 inches. They were in 160 to 200 feet of water 25-40' OTW

What were the two new reel?

At least you guys pulled in some fish to go with the bad times.

What were the two new reel?

They’re Shimano reels, very smooth reels. I have two, and
Seon had two, he ordered two more to use for salmon trolling, but the new reels had something wrong with the drag.

Isn't there a hotel/motel in Bodega Bay as you turn left to to the Westside campsite?

Yes there is but it is not boat trailer friendly and that is from experience
