Re: why I hate bait shops

    Sal thats my point,

I used to be able go hang out and bs and get good info and good bait. My problem is I get garbage info and bad bait. So in my eyes why go. Be great if someone revitalized the freeport area fishing scene.

Plenty of good shops, just not the ones near me.

Re: why I hate bait shops

I like bait shops. Get first hand or second hand info from a number of sources (for free or almost free), have products that work and are available right now, get to bs with the owner/employee. Pricing? Can't judge since I'm kinda new, but I do enjoy visiting them.

Just wish there were more of them around closer to me that I could support.

    Best,
    Here they come!

Re: why I hate bait shops

Running a bait shop or any small business your usually in a niche market. So you have to supply a specific thing in order to succeed. Most bait shops ive been I have no issue with. Maybe its because these are the shops ive been going to for 20+ years and when things change...its not always for the good. But hey...what can you do. Thats what this soap box is for.

Any business would not survive without their customers. You cannot keep a customer unless they are happy.

Re: why I hate bait shops

Having a small business in general is brutal. The economy stinks and everyone is looking to save that is a given and working with the public is a chore under those circumstances. I know because I am a small, very small business owner, I employ two guys and this wonderful state just keeps making it harder. The bait shop business would be tough just under regular circumstances being seasonal and all. You have to be a special kind of person to tolerate the public and it takes its toll. Does this excuse bad sales behavior...nope but I do understand it. The bait shop out at black point is winding down and will be closing possibly in the near future and the owner has his own shrimp boat! I barely get to go out on the bay or Petaluma river but when I do I always made a point to go there and load up. Top notch service and honest reports that included bad reports as well. Never stopped me from trying. Sorry to hear about Freeport as they are definitely suffering just to make ends meet. The only thing I can add to this is to pay attention to politics local and federal level and vote! Too many idiots just vote from a sound bite and pretty packaging and it is bleeding this state and country dry. No civilization has ever taxed themselves into prosperity and if anyone doesn't agree well just look around at the unemployment, welfare and foreclosure statistics. I am stepping down from my box and hope that somehow things will get better in a few years...

Yes but Walmarts get cheaper wholesale prices. I'm not discounting what you say about these shops but its not as easy as some think. My reps would tell me all the time that my price was the same than you get to see another places invoices and see the difference

Places in Freeport try to capitalize on the fact that there next to the river and you can't go anywhere else at the time to get what you need. I really wouldn't want to be a bait shop owner that's for sure

Small business is a tough job. Walmart can afford to buy a million flying c spinners so they pay $2.00 ea the bait shop can only afford to buy a hundred and have to pay $4.00 ea. these are not exact figures but being a former small business owner I understand the prices. One thing that keeps them in business is quality and customer service! Without that no one has a reason to shop at the ma and pa shops

Ask the norcal mepps sales rep as far as price goes. Its the same to manufacture the product whether its sold at a bait shop or walmart. Walmart had a smaller selection actually compared to say romeos bait and tackle. What walmart doesnt have is the intimidator sport fishing boat and company to pay for. Higher bills= higher price for items such as bait, tackle, ect. Im not here to debate corporation vs. mom and pop shops. Ill go local everytime I can. I love silvertrons and montis. Just dislike bait shops that charge huge for product. Even elkhorn bait has cheaper product than the bait shops around freeport. They're out in the boonies, way further than any bait shop. But those guys there are always willing to help and give great deals.

Another reason why you might be getting lower quality bait. As the bait supplier goes inland stop after stop, they're probably selling whats at the bottom of the bucket by the time they get up river. Buy your lures online in bulk or at walmart. When I order online I usually buy about 5-10 lures to get the deal, otherwise 1 lure plus shipping and your over paying. Find out when the bait suppliers arrive so you can get the freshest live bait possible.

Ive taken transport and quanity into consideredation. Kinda my point. If the bait is bottom of the barrell then dont charge for it like its top shelf. I used to buy fresh sardines at buds bait shop. Buds has been long gone now its delta. Fresh anything in freeport is hard to come by. Small ghost shrimp and most of the time blood and pile worms are over priced and under sized. Same with mud suckers.

Its also the attitude of the owners. They have a clientele that they cater too. If your not a usual customer....good luck.

Freeport has changed alot. Im not the only whos noticed. Never had to worry about "jackers" before. Now its way to common to have a thief break a window while your bank fishing. Plenty of cars, boats, and trailers have been vandalized at garcia bend.

Im not stupid. I know it happens everywhere. But the problems in the freeport area are increasing and if anyone says otherwise....talk to a local.
