    Monterey Bay, Marina State Beach

Going with the better half to Marina State Beach area 1/13/18. Wife has been there her sisters, said guys were fishing from the beach there. She told me to bring my poles. Never surf fished. Any hints of how to approach this. I was thinking sliding sinker/Texas rig size 1 or 2 hook. I’ve read sand shrimp, maybe squid. I got a couple of Heddon top water baits.

    Any other suggestions?

Carolina rig gulp camo sandworms for perch or smelt

Wouldn't bother with the top water, it's cold and the bass are in the central bay/delta

Definitely bring your top water!!! I was there a few weeks ago. My dad and I saw stripers busting bait on several occasions. We kicked ourselves in the butt all day long for not bringing a top water. But on the other hand the surf perch bite is on right now!! 4 inch GULP camo worms (surf perch crack) was the ticket on a #4 worm hook, three feet of 10 pound leader, glass bead, 3/4 to1 ounce egg sinker. Easy set up that catches fish!!

Never been there, but the camo sand worm setup has been a go to for surf perch in many locations up and down the California coast. Good luck!

Never fished there, but did "visit" it a couple of times during basic training at Fort Ord in early '71. Had my M-16 in hand and ended up with an "all expenses paid" tour of Vietnam :) . Was a long hike from the barracks to the beach and back... (usually followed by PT).

Sounds like a plan. Remember that the perch are not far out past the breakers. They will usually bite just past, in, or just short of the breaking waves. Look for changes in the break patterns and fish those areas harder. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Got here about 4:00. Walked on the beach. A difinite trough and channel causing rip tide, in front of resort. Wife said men were fishing there when she was here in November with her sisters.
    👍👍👍🎣👍👍
