    Re: Ocean salmon rod help?

The 7" Ugly stick tiger rods 12-25 is very versatile, under $100. 8' Okuma PCH rods are phenomenal for under $200. Medium action rods are the way to go. Fishing from a downrigger, 9-10ft is optimal. I use a 9'6" Heavy G Loomis Gl2. The heavy action helps from the stress of being bent for hours on the DR.

You don't have to break the bank buying a trolling rod for a Salmon. An Ugly Stik Tiger 7' medium action 2201 if you're using quick release. They're cheap and does the job. $70

In the future if you troll using downriggers, I'd suggest Cabelas Deep Master Trolling Series DM20B/DMDR80M $70

I assume you're running mono on the Tekota? You can get away with a slightly stiffer rod since it will stretch, but definitely look for something that can handle the weight of a heavy lead ball if you're using a sinker release system. You don't need anything fancy or purpose built for trolling, most jigging sticks or rods with a softer tip work well. Medium or Medium Heavy power and a medium fast action is probably best.

I use a Trevala ML or Diawa Saltist M jigging rod, but I typically fish with 40 lb braid on a downrigger or diver.

One thing to watch out for
A lot of "west coast" series rods are designed for the so cal fisheries. Typically= faster tapers for pitching sardines around or jigging. Maybe not the best options for barbless hooks and salmon. A moderate action rebounds slower and helps barbless hooks stay in place

Check out Okuma PCH series. They're new for 2018 and have rods that are in your budget and I think will fit the application very well.
