I bought my self a 5wt classic trout rod with Rio Gold line. I went out to the little Truckee 3 times over the past few weeks and landed 8 bows total. Lost more than I caught. My tippet was extremely light, 7x 2.5lb. Had lots of fun and learned many new things.

Get out to the West Carson in Hope Valley. It's a wide open medow that is easy for practicing and is loaded with truck trout so chances are while you're practicing you will catch fish.

Has anyone sampled the various product mentioned here, and can they tell which one is the best?

    If you do try shad............

a heavy, fast sinking line is nice to have or..........
if only a floating line, you can tie in a 1/8 or 1/16 oz jig and roll cast with a long leader.

A large lawn is a great place to learn casting, also.
    Good luck

It's a tough area to get to the main flow but a good area. I was out this morning, north side upper sunrise or lower sailor bar depending how you look at it. Shady side, and harder to find casting room. Hot out there! The lower flows are really helping, but you still need to be cautious.

Might have to give it a shot today, Ill go grab some shad flies in a bit. Do you guys fish near Rio Americano high school?
