Get some Shad darts or small 1” plastic grubs in chartreuse, pink, orange or some bright color. It is barbless at Sunrise bridge so you have to crimp the hook barb down. You will probably need around 1/2 ounce of weight right now. Cast up stream and let it drift down. Move around and walk the river until you find them. Usually when you catch 1 in a location you can catch a few more in the same spot

    Re: American run

I am a complete noob, literally never have fished before. I am staying at a friends house who lives right by the american river footbridge at Sunrise blvd. So, I bought a rod and tackle today, got my fishing license. I youtubed how to cast, but I have little idea what to use as bait or what I can and can't keep the day I catch a fish.... I'm going in the morning any tips or advice would be appreciated. I can't believe how much I have already learned from this forum in the last hour, I can't wait for sunrise

Only 500-600....gee sounds like a slow season for sure or you just don’t know what you are doing....haha

Good for you. Probably just bad timing on my part. Been a busy year with work but I’ll be back out there this afternoon

I was out today from 630 am till 3 pm. Plenty of shad in the river . Was on the Sunrise pedestrian bridge, saw big schools underneath. Boaters caught 40+. Early morning and evening bites still working well. Maybe another couple of weeks before it's over .

That looks ugly... I'd rather not go fishing than be anywhere near that.

Do you think they might have not made it past this gauntlet? Everyone in the lower sac seems to keep them therefore there are less to make it up river.

Agree. Didn’t fish from the bridge either. Both guys I saw on both sides of the bridge were not catching either. Probably the time of day (mid afternoon) but when the fish are in I never had a problem if it was morning, noon, or evening. Although I have had some epic evenings in the last couple years for sure
