Re: Most common or popular casting rod/reel for plugging stripers

Thanks, all. I ended up picking up a Silver Max and will be pairing it with a medium rod and try my hands at flipping, pitching, and casting some spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and topwater (if I ever get the chance at gray light).

    100-200 yard capacity 30lb braid

Abu Garcia Black Max, Shimano Curado, Diawa Lexa 200 series.

Pull up Cabelas on-line and look for casting reels. Low profile with magnetic spool breaks. No need to go for larger capacity, round reels, or line counters for that application. I'm partial to the Curados because they're mid-level priced and have been historically very reliable. Black Max is cheaper but works fine. There are a million choices.

right or left crank arm ?
power pro line will at least double line capacity, 30# braid is same diameter as 10# mono
$35 on up for the reel.
Id go with fiberglass rods, ugly sticks are the best for the dollar and I still have many that are over 30 years old and still in use

I bought one of these reels in left hand, but I'm right handed.
Your can buy same reel with top branded name for a lot more

Brands and models range all over the place and Id recommend buying based on your own budget. You could spend $100 or $1,000 and catch fish either way.

    My 2 cents

Most common or popular casting rod/reel for plugging stripers

Hi - I'm wondering about the most popular casting rod/reel for plugging stripers. I mostly fish the bay and target stripers in the summer time, but am interested in getting a smaller setup that perhaps mimics what freshwater folks use. My goal is to get a setup for throwing smaller lures in the 1/4-3/8oz range for when the wind is down, and for more accurate casts.
